Celebrate our library this week, this next year
From the editor

Sunday started National library week. How cool is that? This is its 60th anniversary. “It is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation’s libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support,” as the American Library Association website states. Here is a shout out to two specific libraries: The La Conner School District’s and the La Conner Regional Library.
This year’s theme is “Libraries Lead.” Our library – your library – means to lead us into the 21st century by leading us into a new building, with construction starting by late 2019. To get us into that new library, almost $1.7 million must be raised to obtain $500,000 in matching funds allocated by the state this winter. That is a lot of money, a real stretch, for our little community. Together we can do it.
Consider the library’s mission statement: “The mission of the La Conner Regional Library is to promote the enjoyment of reading, to provide resources to meet the informational needs of the community and to support educational and cultural activities of local organizations.” Whatever your age or station in life, this library is here for you.
While the new library is about physical reality: bricks and mortars, rooms, table and chairs and the dedicated staff serving us, the books and website access are only the door allowing us to enter a universe that can alter our lives – your lives, your children’s lives and their children’s children.
This specific library is more than about words and more than about thinking. Books and websites are portals into hopes, ideas and dreaming. They offer the chance to explore not only the world and the universe – almost literally – but ourselves, too, very literally. also.
How often do you use the library and how do you use it? Reflect on how a bigger, welcoming building may change your frequency of use and also change your relationships with family and friends. Whether you have young kids, older kids, no kids, or are a kid, a new library building will open up worlds of possibilities.
It’s location on Morris at Sixth Street will signal to tourists and visitors – your families and friends – that this is a town that cares about and takes care of its own, its visitors and the future. Talk of freshening up Morris Street and of welcoming arches will be catalyzed into action by the investment the library represents. Our challenge will be to make a Morris Street that is as wonderful as the library that anchors it.
Thursday is “Take Action for Libraries Day.” Our challenge is for continuous action for the next year. Consider: $1.7 million over 15 months is $113,000 monthly. It is $26,150 raised every week. It requires obtaining $3,735 daily.
The stakes are high. La Connerites love a challenge. The one before us is clear.
Have you written your first check yet?
This paper has. More checks, and more build the library editorials, will be forthcoming from it.
