Colin Kaepernick, a brave patriot

Regarding Dick Nord’s letter to the editor last week: I agreed with everything he said, but not quite as strongly. I’m 90 years old and have been a strong 49er supporter from their start many years ago. They had a 20-year dynasty in the 70s and 80s, but it finally ended. It wasn’t until Colin Kaepernick came along and took the 49ers all the way back to the Super Bowl that their dignity was restored.
I fell in love with Kaepernick: As an adopted child he grew into a great athlete, setting gridiron records that may never be broken . He has led an exemplar life, no beating up women, taking drugs, hardworking, with an outstanding record of contributing to various charities, a man to be proud of, a good American.
But, last year after refusing to stand up for the national anthem, I had to take another assessment of him. It seemed so out of character, why was he doing this? I gave this a lot of serious thought.
First of all, I am not black, and as a white man, I say to myself, “what’s the problem”? Since I can’t speak for a black man, I decided that the millions of dollars he is personally sacrificing, for what he believes in, he deserves to be taken seriously. This doesn’t make him disloyal to the country, instead of standing, he knelt. In some eyes kneeling may be even more of a dedication to country than standing. I have decided to give him a break. He’s extremely brave to do what he is doing and deserves some respect and understanding.
