From the editor -- War and Peace
Seventy-two years ago today, August 9, 1945, the last atomic bomb ever used was dropped on Nagasaki.
On this date, during this week, doesn’t every patriotic, heart-sensitive citizen take pause on yet another anniversary of our dropping atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki? Especially if you live in the Pacific Northwest, where so many of our neighbors have Japanese ancestry?

Flag and football
Dear Mr. Michael Bennett,
Mr. Bennett, you have offended me.
Others feel as I do, and I hope they also show their disdain for your actions.
I was and remain a United States Marine. I proudly stand tall for the United States of America when any of its symbols are displayed. You see I served with those that fought and gave their lives for our flag, our anthem, our country, and yes, our freedom.
Having visited Arlington Cemetery, I have seen our bravest being laid to rest, and honored with a flag draped coffin while Taps sounded the final note to a most significant life. I’ve seen a neatly folded flag being placed in the hands of a grieving mother, wife or relative who will forever cope with that loss and the memory of that day.
Please take a moment to think about them as you sit during the next national anthem.

Pow wow news
Wow! What great coverage of the Swinomish Pow Wow last week. Nearly the entire front page. It was unfortunate that we couldn’t have had just a fraction of that coverage pre-event the week before.

Local news means local
This letter is in response to the comment you made in your article titled, “My Country, My World, Near and Far.” In your article you make the rhetorical statement that, “Maybe you are asking why the editor of your small-town paper is writing about atomic bombs, endless war, and climate change.”
Well, aside from whatever personal drive you may have to become a national journalistic figure, yes, I am kind’a curious.

Musings -- On the editor's mind
Since coming to La Conner I have truly learned what being rooted means. Whether Gail Thulen telling me that when his grandson graduates from WSU and comes home he will be the family’s sixth generation farmer or Bobbi Krebs reflecting on her grandmother’s coming around 1903, or hearing Wallaces remember their family’s arrival that same year, clearly Skagit Valley roots run deep. Across the country these are classic American stories.
