Tuesday marked the longest number of consecutive days on record that Seattle has been without rain since 1951. While La Conner encountered a light shower July 20, it was not considered measurable precipitation. Extreme dry heat is affecting most of Western Washington, but the smoky haze from the wildfires in British Columbia and the Chuckanut Mountains, has saved La Conner from the high temperatures seen in other communities. That haze comes at a price: Last week the Skagit County Public Health...
It was a made in the shade kind of day in La Conner on Thursday. Good thing, too. That’s because a historic heat wave coupled with hazy conditions from Canadian wildfires was the backdrop for the 113th annual Pioneer Picnic. Former Anacortes Police Chief Bonnie Bowers, who earlier in her career patrolled La Conner, was among the honored guests. Bowers joined more than 200 people gathered at Pioneer Park to enjoy sockeye salmon barbecued by La Conner’s “Good Girls” and provided by members...
Two people are being held for investigation of two counts of murder and one count of arson in relation to a fire that killed two children on Bayview Road early Saturday morning that fully engulfed the house in flames. Kimberly Hughes, 31, and Jaramy Chism, 24, are both being held for investigation, according to the court affidavit, on $2 million bail. According to a Washington Court records search, Hughes has been a defendant in 27 other criminal proceedings in Skagit County, including a...
Oh rats! Kevin Peterson, who has been a licensed pest control technician 30 years and is the general manager of Cascade Pest Control, says La Conner is especially prone to the critters. In the last 20 years, rat populations have spread themselves from the waterfront, out across the town and even across the channel into neighborhoods like Shelter Bay, Peterson said. Skagit County has also seen a recent case of Hantavirus, from which the resident has since recovered. Hantavirus is carried by rodent feces and urine, which can be accidently...
When Allen Sackett received his La Conner town water bill, he thought it was $12. It wasn’t until he opened it all the way he saw it was actually $812.32. “That’s crazy!” Sackett said. During the month of May, Sackett was fixing up the townhouse he had lived in for 15 years, getting it ready for sale. He said although he was not living there, while rebuilding the deck the longest gap he was gone during the month was two days. He said hadn’t used any water during May and “I checked every night,” Sackett said, to make sure nothing was left on....
Cake for breakfast, and recognition for three people, made Fire District 13’s regularly scheduled morning meeting a special day. Firefighter Tony Curran was named one of four people to receive EMS Provider of the Year from Skagit County Emergency Services on Thursday. According to a press release from Fire District 13, during the last year Curran has responded to 411 emergency calls, assisted transporting 116 people to hospitals and assisted paramedics in four successful CPRs. “I try my hardest...
The La Conner Boys & Girls Club closed last week and will not reopen for the next school year. Ron McHenry, Executive Director of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Skagit County, said that as of June 16 the club no longer offers after-school programs for local children. In September that job will fall to the La Conner School District, which intends to have a new program up and running on the first day of school. McHenry said the La Conner site of the Boys & Girls Club was costing too much to staff in keeping with the national club’s requirements. ...
For the first time in recent history, a La Conner town firefighter has been named Skagit County’s “EMS Provider of the Year.” Captain Annie Avery of the La Conner Volunteer Fire Department was surprised when county officials turned out to present her with the award at the fire department’s regular Wednesday business meeting last week. Avery has been a volunteer firefighter since 2004, and EMT certified since 2006. She was encouraged to become a firefighter by her father-in-law, retired firefig...
