    Mickey Bambrick|Mar 23, 2016

Yes! They did it! La Conner’s Knowledge Bowl team made a name for our small town by winning the state championship — the first Knowledge Bowl team in the school’s history to accomplish such a feat. Senior Will Malcomson was clearly the heavyweight that carried the team to an exciting victory last Saturday in Arlington, but team captain Kaleb Slaatthaug, along with Keith Carlton, Elizabeth Tripp and Myken Hassler all played an important part in clinching this impressive title. Acc...

    Mickey Bambrick|Nov 25, 2015

La Conner’s Knowledge Bowl Team, “Somewhat Clean,” started off the competition year with an impressive victory in their first of three district rounds last week in Snohomish. Meanwhile, La Conner’s team “Too Fre$h,” consisting mostly of freshmen new to Knowledge Bowl, took second place in the 2B division. “Somewhat Clean” is mostly made up of seniors this year and is proving to be the team to beat, as they secured the overall winning spot by a margin of 13 points — even when competing...

  • Somewhat Clean takes State silver

    Mickey Bambrick|Mar 18, 2015

Second in State! That’s the status of La Conner High School’s “Somewhat Clean” Knowledge Bowl team after the State tournament last Saturday in Arlington. The competition was an entire day’s worth of brain-draining stress, as the six team members boarded the bus before sunrise and didn’t finish until late afternoon. They competed against 18 other 2B ranked schools from across the state in a brain sport similar to “Jeopardy!” It was all about who knew what and who could buzz in first with the...

    Mickey Bambrick|Nov 19, 2014

La Conner High School’s Knowledge Bowl team, “Somewhat Clean,” got off to an exciting start last week when they tied for First Place at the first of three qualifying District tournaments. What’s most impressive about this particular win is that schools of every size in Northwest Washington compete together in these early rounds. Due to La Conner’s small student body size, they are ranked as a “2B” category school, so when they compete in the Regional and State competitions later in the school...

  • La Conner brain team places at state

    Mickey Bambrick|Mar 26, 2014

Two teams from La Conner High School competed in the state Knowledge Bowl tournament held in Arlington on Saturday. Team “Somewhat Clean” finished in fourth place, and team “Somewhat Smart,” Emily Parker, Lily Weigova, Maggie Powell, and Katie Cram came in a respectable 18th. Somewhat Clean’s fourth place award plaque in the 2B category is something that hasn’t been earned by a La Conner team since 2004. Senior Alex Wirth, juniors Jordan Holt and Luke Hulbert, sophomores Will Malcomson a...

  • Life on the Ridge and Nuggets from Norway

    Mickey Bambrick|Jan 1, 1970

As a child, Mickey Bambrick dreamed of being a writer. Erma Bombeck was her idol. She longed to become a columnist, writing about everyday life. Knowing journalism was a competitive field and didn’t always pay well, she was swayed into the field of computer management after she graduated fromPomonaCollege. Far too many years of corporate life passed before she gave it all up, married a Norwegian, and eventually transitioned into being a “homeschool mom.” From 2008-09 she and her family lived...
