The final numbers were similar, but moods of La Conner and South Whidbey players couldn’t have been more different at Landy James Gym Saturday afternoon. That’s because the Lady Braves transposed the winning score, creating a lopsided margin of victory, in their matinee non-league hoop matchup. La Conner routed South Whidbey 61-16 in a game where from the start, everything added up nicely for the Braves. The hosts bolted to a quick double-digit lead, seizing command 21-6 in the first frame, en...
The La Conner High football team was looking to take top-ranked Napavine by storm. But the weather got there first. La Conner’s fast and furious attack, which hadn’t scored less than 53 points in a game all season, had trouble getting untracked on a muddy field deluged by heavy rainfall that struck Western Washington last week. A stingy Tiger stop unit, which has helped propel Napavine atop State 2B polls, was a key factor as well. The result was an upset bid by No. 5 La Conner that literally slipped away. The Braves suffered a 24-14 non...

Which was a real treat for Braves’ head coach Steve DeLeon and La Conner High School fans. La Conner benefitted from not one hat trick — but — in its impressive 7-1 league triumph. Wylie Thulen and Pablo Guirao Melendez each recorded three-goal hat tricks for the victors, who picked up their fourth win of the league campaign. Dylan Watkins also scored for La Conner. Back in the day, a player scoring thr...

La Conner High axed Dar-rington 52-20 for a pivotal league road triumph that allowed the Braves to remain unbeaten at 5-0 in conference play and improve to 8-1 overall. Quarterback Sean Hulbert and running back Wil James rushed for three touchdowns apiece before the break, as the Braves churned out 361 yards on the ground. La Conner bolted to a 42-6 halftime lead and never looked back. It was a deficit even the Loggers found hard to trim. “I rea...
Matt Finley gave it his best shot when La Conner faced a frantic South Whidbey comeback bid Saturday night. And, fortunately for the Braves, that shot – the free throw – was just enough for La Conner to secure a hard-fought 61-59 non-league home hoop triumph. Finley delivered nine of 10 pressure-packed foul shots down the stretch as La Conner High withstood a 32-point Falcon blitz in the final stanza. Finley finished with 11 points, joining Cameron Sherman and Skylar Krueger in double-digits for the Braves. Sherman scored a...

I’m excited to tell you, if you haven’t already heard, there’s a challenger to Republican Ron Wesen, the county commissioner currently representing our District (No. 1). I’m excited not only because Wesen is not unopposed (as was true the last time he ran), but also because the Democratic challenger, Mark Lundsten, is an excellent candidate. He is smart, articulate, hard-working and, importantly, in this day and age, collaborative. He knows how to listen and to take action. If you are as tired as I am with the court challenges filed and los...
