  • It's important to me that we elect a common sense senator from District 10

    Jan 1, 1970

Dear Editor: As an Army veteran and retired businessman still active in my community’s civic activities, its important to me that we elect a common sense senator from District 10 who has demonstrated wide-ranging success representing our region. For 10 years on Whidbey I have been able to evaluate Helen Price Johnson as an effective advocate for our community interests in regional government. And as a member of the County Planning Commission and the Whidbey Community Foundation I have been able to observe Helen up close. Her modus operandi i...

  • A second wave?

    Jan 1, 1970

A second wave? Not yet – because COVID-19 never really went away. You cannot have a second wave if you haven’t properly dealt with the current wave of infections. Why are we so worried about a second wave of infections in the United States when COVID -19 infections have not stopped and they are escalating rapidly? Beijing China had 55 consecutive days with no new infections. Beijing now finds itself in another lockdown because new cases have suddenly emerged. Memorial Day in the United States seemed to be our rites of passage toward t...

  • Thank You, John Doyle

    Jan 1, 1970

As a Town Council person (2000-2004) when we hired John Doyle, I want to commend his long and conscientious service. He started with one job and did so well, he took on another! As planner and administrator, he has been clear, fair, judicious and mostly helpful in applying and enforcing Town ordinances such that all entities were treated equally, efficiently and knew what to expect in planning their projects. His experience is broad and deep. It will be difficult to find someone to fill his shoes. I wish him well in retirement. Joan Cross La...

  • The "Why:" La Conner: A great community

    Jan 1, 1970

“Why” is the reason for which we get up every day. The “Why” is who we are. We find ourselves here in March, confronted with the evolving impact of COVID-19 and with market volatility with both local and global uncertainty. My “Why” is believing a strong community that is understanding of others has the ability to remove obstacles to solve complicated problems which will enrich all our lives. My why is supported by my passion of what I do. My passion in my profession is to find and understand what matters most for my clients. What you do can...

  • Jan 1, 1970

Hi Ken, Hope everyone at the La Conner Weekly News is well. Just wanted to tell you (perhaps you already know) that when I dropped by my shop Friday I found a little glass jar/vase with some lovely flowers in it and a blue colored, heart shaped note card that said “We’re Blue without You.” I was trying to figure out what mystery friend had done this lovely thing ... but as I was driving along First Street I noticed the same “treat” in front of every shop door. Someone or some ones had been a Flower Fairy and performed this not so random ac...

  • Council gets first look at 2022 budget

    Ken Stern|Jan 1, 1970

The La Conner Town Council covered a lot of ground verbally at its Oct. 12 meeting but no items on their agenda required a vote. Thirty-four of the 74 page council packet laid out the 2022 town budget, which Mayor Ramon Hayes had sent council the day before. Hayes told council, “You have a small pool of people, under 1,000, living in a boutique community.” He emphasized their needs must be managed with limited funding, Staff wage increases were one of a few line items emphasized, with Finance Director Maria DeGoede explaining it is pegged to th...

  • La Conner officeholders will win unchallenged

    Ken Stern|Jan 1, 1970

Once they cast their ballots in November, all La Conner area government officeholders running for reelection will win. Not a single one is opposed. Two years after two incumbents for La Conner school district board of directors were defeated in the 2019 elections, three directors are running unchallenged. All were appointed to their positions. They now will win election when they vote for themselves in the fall. District 2 Director Amanda Bourgeois will fill an unexpired two year term, District 3 Director Jeremy Wilbur gains a full four-year...

  • Pan Fried Halibut

    Patricia Aqiimuk Paul|Jan 1, 1970

When I cook halibut, I think of my adopted dad, Roman Edward Witkowski. He loved to fish and passed that interest onto me. When he passed, I selected his 24-foot Reinell boat and the 18-foot Tioga motor home. Then Kevin and I hired a driver, from the Ziegler family, to drive both down the Alaska Highway, to us, here at Swinomish. We hired the Bill family to fish our boat. Then we used my boat as a down payment on the house, thirty years ago; and where we reside to this day. When I select cuts...
