  • The cost of education in La Conner

    Sandy Stokes|Jan 11, 2017

As the La Conner School District prepares to again ask voters to approve a new two-year $2.5 million property tax levy, it commissioned a study to answer a question that keeps popping up: Why does La Conner spend more per student than many other districts in the state and $4,607 per student more than other districts in the county? The answer is mostly because it has the money to spend. At its meeting on Monday, the school board heard a more in-depth explanation. • La Conner ditches flood insurance fandango

    Sandy Stokes|Jan 11, 2017

For most La Conner property owners, flood insurance is a big deal – and it’s about to become an even bigger one. On Tuesday, after spending thousands of town dollars in staff time to comply with Federal Management Agency’s Community Rating Service requirements over the years, the Town Council voted unanimously to cut bait and drop out of the program because it is costing too much in bureaucratic paperwork. Venn said that the firm expects to have a panel of about 30 by the Jan. 23 application deadline. Typically, he said, there will be a flurry of applicants at the last minute. T...

And the Braves would be minus senior wing Brady Nelson, who had drained three deep treys in La Conner’s win over 1A Nooksack Valley at the recent Crush in the Slush hoopfest in Port Townsend. Those worries, though, were eclipsed by a long-awaited Lu...

  • Lady Braves withstand Hurricane visit

    Bill Reynolds|Jan 11, 2017

There would be no blowout — either way — when La Conner High hosted the Mount Vernon Christian Lady Hurricanes in girls’ hoop action on Friday. A hard-fought, batten-down-the-hatches clash was expected. And that’s exactly the scenario that unfolded. In the end, it was La Conner who sailed — though not always smoothly — to a gritty 35-27 victory. “It was kind of a grinder game,” Lady Braves head coach Scott Novak said afterward, “but we found a way to get a win.” For...
