Dear Editor: I want to express both my frustration and concern because of the snow that was still on the sidewalks (by Friday). I walked through town both on Tuesday and again Friday, and was not impressed by the homeowners, business owners (and that would include the La Conner Weekly News), even the city (sidewalk on the west side of the public parking lot), who did not have the sidewalk clean. I found it so ironic that someone would shovel a path from their door to their mail/paper box, but wouldn’t shovel the sidewalk. This type of b...
I am reaching out to the people of La Conner to see if anyone knows who owns the border collie mix that I have seen walking along Snee Oosh and Indian Roads? This dog is an EXACT replica of my best friend – may she RIP – of which I have never seen an exact match of (mind you she was a mix of some sorts). I rarely visit La Conner and the last two times I was there (September and November, I believe) I saw this mystery dog walking along the road, which leads me to believe he/she frequents the area and someone may know of his/her...
(R-Clinton) The 60-day legislative session began on January 13. While this is considered a short session, several important issues will be considered. Here are a few of the storylines: Data privacy As ranking member on the House Innovation, Technology and Economic Development Committee, I’m sponsoring legislation to address online data privacy for consumers. My goal for these bills is to empower consumers, hold corporations accountable and provide meaningful access to justice when needed to protect your rights. • House Bill 2364 would enac...
Dear Friends and Neighbors – I am pleased to be able to share a few thoughts about the current activities of the Swinomish Tribe. Swinomish has grown in the past 20 years from approximately 500 to 1,000 tribal citizens. Our governing body, the Swinomish Senate, continues to be committed to improving the lives and well-being of our tribal members by providing the very best governmental services we can, including health and social programs, affordable housing, financial services, cultural programs, education (from early childhood through...
The drama playing out in the other Washington – the third impeachment trial in our nation’s history, though the second in 20 years – is being done for us, by our elected representatives. When the House of Representatives impeached President Trump in December, one person in our congressional district, U.S. Rep. Rick Larsen, voted. Larsen determined the president was not fit to hold office. Larsen judged that Trump’s disdain for the concept of citizenship through his trash talking against four women congressional representatives was...
Boyd W. Zimmerman passed away Saturday, January 11, 2020 at home surrounded by his family. He was born in Noonan, North Dakota to Edgar and Stella (Kjos) Zimmerman on October 14, 1930. The family moved to La Conner in 1936. Boyd graduated from La Conner High School in 1949. Shortly after graduation he married Donna Green, in 1951. They were married for sixty-eight years. Donna preceded him in death in 2019. Boyd began working at Zimmerman’s Service Station in 1949. He worked with his Dad until his Dad retired, at which time he purchased the s...
Like the successful café owner he was, Tim Fisher filled the place to overflowing his final shift: a memorial service for him at Maple Hall Monday afternoon. His 75 friends, family, customers, employees and his husband, Patrick Ball, had to take their chairs and move to the main hall from the Town Council meeting room. Fittingly, it was set for feeding the crowd, catered by Sliders Café, the restaurant he opened with Ball in April 2017. Fisher, 53, died Jan. 20 from cancer. Father Paul Magnano, pastor of La Conner’s Sacred H...
Start your planning now for the second annual Sunrise Food Bank fundraiser in 2021. It will be a night of music & silent auction. And folks have a year to prepare, much more than the nine weeks the Food Bank board gave themselves last November. Michelle Havist, the still new director, feels confident they will net more than the $15,000 they raised Saturday at Maple Hall. The music was from the ‘60s for a crowd that averaged a higher age than that, but for the night were back in their twenties d...
What a night – thank you, La Conner! I was so overwhelmed by the support and generosity of our community on Saturday night, that I didn’t do a very good job thanking everyone who helped make the La Conner Sunrise Food Bank’s First Annual Fundraiser – “A Night of Music and Silent Auction” – the huge success it was. It all started nine weeks ago with our four people planning committee and graphic designer, Sandy Johnson. Sandy donated her time to create the fantastic posters and flyers you saw around town. I had people come up t...
It wasn’t just La Conner’s students who had the day off last Wednesday. It is not known how many owners or employees joined kids on the Washington Avenue sledding hill, but except for Pioneer Market and Stompin Grounds, where Kim Broadhead was engaged with her regular customers midmorning, Morris Street was eerily quiet early. The open sign was out at Vintage Lighting but it wasn’t certain that employees were inside. A much sadder sign was taped to the door of Sliders Cafe: They were closed Wedn...
