La Conner Middle School seventh grader Charity Jordan is on her way to the Scripps Spelling Bee, in the Washington DC area for the second year in a row. Charity, 13, won the regional spelling bee last Saturday after competing against 32 others and spelling B-O-L-S-H-E-V-I-K. Bolshevik is the old name for the Russian Social Democratic Party, which was renamed the Communist Party after it seized power in the October Revolution of 1917. Before competing in the regional bee, Charity out-spelled 12...
La Conner’s Volunteer Fire Department was excited to learn that the town’s fire protection rating has improved. What this means for homeowners is the possibility of obtaining better rates on their homeowners fire insurance. Fire Chief Josh Morrison said that when the Washington Surveying and Rating Bureau conducted an audit earlier this month, he thought it went well. Later, he learned that the town’s fire protection rating has gone from a 7 to a 6 — in this case, the lower the number the better on a scale of 1 to 10. “I am really...

The La Conner High track teams got out of the blocks in style last week. The Braves had a literal field day in their season home debut, while the Lady Braves made mad dashes that nearly had them sitting atop an eight-school field. The La Conner boys, with Kaden Murdock and Brady Nelson winning two field events apiece, edged Mount Vernon Christian 129-114 for the team title. Grace Academy, with 96 points, finished third. The Lady Braves, meanwhile, placed a close second to Mount Vernon...
When a basketball team scores 120 points, it’s easy for numbers to get lost on the stat sheet. Not so in the case of La Conner High senior Nakiya Edwards, who played a standout role in the 2B team’s 120-68 rout of its 1B opposite number at King’s High School in Edmonds on Saturday. Edwards filled the stat line for the victors in the annual Washington State Girls Basketball Coaches Association Senior All-State Game. Edwards recorded seven points, three rebounds, a steal, and an assist while...
The Summit Park Grange in Anacortes was the place to be last Wednesday night for people with a stake in the land disputes that have put the Swinomish tribe at odds with some property owners and leaders from the Samish tribe, City of Anacortes and Skagit County. A panel of seven representing the city, county and Samish sat onstage, facing a room so crowded that people without seats leaned against the walls and spilled out the back door. Organizers counted 220 attendees. Landowners are worried the Swinomish Indian Tribal Community could assert...

Earlier this month, this newspaper documented a pair of closed meetings held by the Swinomish Indian Tribal Community. I want to make it clear to our readers that this newspaper stands behind those stories. We granted space for a lengthy letter by Swinomish tribal attorney Stephen LeCuyer to express their version of the truth. Our stories provided another example of how Swinomish and other tribes are given a venue to manipulate public policy that affects all of us by holding closed meetings with public agencies funded by taxpayers. As we...
I read with great interest Stephen T. LeCuyer’s letter to the Editor in the March 8 La Conner Weekly News. In this day and age, information is communicated swiftly, but unfortunately not always thoroughly. Information from leaders of our federal government is often limited to “tweets” from our President that at times are more puzzling than helpful and informative. That, in my view, makes the role of the press in our society even more important in keeping track of what is happening in our local and federal governments. We have a local newsp...
I agree with the tone of the letter of Gary T. Jones but have a few questions. Mr. Pederson was correct on that point of a lack of information. Without a thorough understanding of this history, and the total lack of regard of the Federal government in setting any of it on a better footing, we will muddle along. Private consultation between the Tribe and the Dept. of Interior? The public should be more involved than it is. Do we really think those in the D of I. can really be aware of the long list of problems arising from the accumulated and...
Thank you, La Conner. I am a history teacher and head football and track coach at La Conner High School and would like to take a moment and say thank you to the La Conner community. In my time at the high school, I have consistently experienced great community support; however, our home track meet on March 15 was a high point. To host a successful track meet, it takes 40+ people, nearly all volunteer, to safely and adequately staff everything. In most schools of any size, the responsibility of officiating and running the various events at a...
What is an Indian reserva-tion, territorially speaking? “The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, School Edition, 1970, page 1106 has five definitions for reservation: Definition No. 1 reads: “The act of preserving; a keeping back or withholding.” Definitions No. 2 & No. 3 are similarly general. Definition No. 4 reads, “A tract of land set apart by the federal government for a special purpose; especially, one for the use of an American Indian people or a tribe.” And, Definition No. 5 deals with hotel and travel reservati...
