A La Conner High track coach teaches her charges how to hit the ground running. Yvonne Naughton, who works with the school’s sprinters and jumpers, is an accomplished ultra-runner, who has qualified for the Irish 24-hour team that will compete at the World Championships in Belfast in July. Her journey has been a long one on several levels. “I grew up in Ireland, taking part in track from about the age of six,” says Naughton, now nearly 40, though she sports a far more youthful appearance. “As a...
After 31 years in law enforcement, Skagit County Sheriff’s Sgt. Kelly Howell’s last day on the job is Friday. He’s been the commander of the Sheriff’s La Conner detachment since last January. “I’m looking forward to it. It’s a new chapter in my life,” he said of his upcoming retirement. “It’s something that you look at when you’re younger, thinking it’s never going to be here — but before you know it, it’s here.” The core philosophy of policing, for him, is to serve the community rather...
Ancient history is helping write the next chapter in the life of a La Conner High senior. Brady Nelson, a 5’-11” three-sport standout for the Braves, signed a National Letter of Intent with Everett Community College to compete in the javelin and high jump for the Trojans next year. The versatile Nelson might also train as a decathlete. All are events based on military skills considered essential in ancient Troy. Which seems an ideal fit for the battle-tested — at least in athletic ter...

This is a simple thank-you to Fire District 13 Chief Roy Horn, the five paramedics and the two EMTs who arrived at my home two Fridays ago. I was in distress. I lost balance, breathing was heavy, heart was racing and my brain was spinning. I thought I was having a heart attack. I had never lost control of my body before and I was scared. I called 911 and these folks arrived in no time. They took readings, did an EKG and held my hand. My readings were high, but this was not a heart attack. I cried and asked them what was wrong with my body. One...

Thank you to the good Samaritan who stopped to help our beloved family dog, Teddy, when she was hit and killed by a car on Snee-Oosh Road Friday, March 24. Although the person who hit her was heartless or cowardly and did not stop, another woman did. This kind and thoughtful individual took our dear, sweet dog to the vet so that she could be identified and returned to us. Our family is devastated by Teddy’s death, but we truly appreciate this selfless act of kindness by an anonymous angel. Thank you very much, Suzann, Marshall, Annika & C...
La Conner High schoolers “oohed and aahed” and clapped enthusiastically for the Chinese Acrobats, who put on a dazzling performance last Wednesday at the high school gym. The four young performers, dressed in colorful costume, balanced various items precariously on their feet and heads while performing impressive athletic feats. The youngest performer, 12-year-old Ma Rong Ge, displayed her strength and flexibility in a bent handstand while her co-performer, Ren Zhuang Ran, 20, added metal pla...
