Democracy in action is learning about and discussing the intricacies of state and federal legislative redistricting in Washington two-plus years ahead of its taking place. The process of democracy took place Monday evening, as some 35 serious citizens came out to a Skagit County League of Women Voters presentation. Linnea Hirst, from the Washington State League of Women Voters, powered through a comprehensive Power-Point presentation covering Washington’s method of deter-mining legislative district boun-daries and summarizing other state s...
Joseph Rossano’s multi-part installation at FORUM Arts in downtown La Conner centers on the urgent need not just to preserve the Earth’s natural resources, but to accept our oneness with those resources. Rossano has been dedicated to ecological conservancy for decades, and as America’s political winds shift ominously away from these concerns, the artist’s project grows all the more urgent and ambitious. The exhibition title, “The Hunted: Reflection of the Hunter,” amounts to a pointed mer...

There will be an artist guided tour. Their exhibition, “Kurume Ikat Kimono – Shoji Yamamura and Makiko Kakihara,” focuses on Kurume kasuri, a type of woven double ikat, that is considered one of Japan’s great cultural treasures. This traditional textile craft has been produced for more than 200 years in Kurume, on Japan’s southernmost island of Kyushu. Yamamur...
Tourist tulip season was in full bloom in La Conner Monday. On Monday! The Third Street parking lot was almost full at 3 p.m. with a steady stream of visitors heading toward downtown. Auto traffic on First Street was slowed by cheek to jowl curbside parking. On the boardwalk, folks streamed by in both directions. People were picnicking at every boardwalk pocket park and the Seafood and Prime Rib and Waterfront Cafe patios were full. The Sliders Cafe was slammed. They had to power through with pa...
Everyone knows there’s no sense crying over spilled milk. Truer still, donated milk is cause for celebration. That thanks to a partnership forged between the Washington State Dairy Commission, Pioneer Market and the La Conner Sunrise Food Bank. The trio has teamed up over the past 10 months to provide nearly 600 gallons of milk to local families in need through the “Give A Gallon” program. Aware that it can be difficult to regularly stock food banks and pantries with milk – which provides...

Sunday started National library week. How cool is that? This is its 60th anniversary. “It is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation’s libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support,” as the American Library Association website states. Here is a shout out to two specific libraries: The La Conner School District’s and the La Conner Regional Library. This year’s theme is “Libraries Lead.” Our library – your library – means to lead us into the 21st century by leading us into a new building, with construc...

I am writing in response to the front page article April 4th issue – regarding the Birds of Winter meeting. Apparently the reporter must have left the room, or at the very least, stopped listening part way through my comments. The article states “Jo Wolfe, a board member representing the La Conner Chamber said ’We do care. La Conner had the most successful event with its birding showcase,’ holding up her chamber’s success but not addressing farmer complaints. Obviously you missed the end of my comments where I elaborated on how importa...
