On the sale of the Kirsch property, consider: The property will be gone forever. The view will be gone forever. The potential for a creative public use will be gone forever. And the proceeds from a sale will soon disappear into the murky waters of an ever-thirsty budget process, never to be seen again. With all this disappearance, what will be left is one – count them one – very happy family (and all its succeeding generations), occupying precious waterfront property with stunning views of the Channel, north and south. They may, or...
To the Editor, Yesterday, May 9th, was a scorcher here in western Washington, even as close to saltwater as we are most everywhere. My sister-in-law Lori and her three sisters from San Diego were visiting me on Whidbey Island before boarding the train in Mount Vernon for Vancouver to embark on a 7-day Alaska cruise. One of Lori’s favorite spots in La Conner is the Soroptomist thrift store and her sisters share that thrifty gene, so off they headed in their rental car. I planned to join them a bit later, which turned out to be during the n...
Dixie Otis’ death last December was a shock and a huge loss to the greater La Conner community. A charter member of the La Conner Soroptimist Club, and its co-president, Otis was an even longer term teacher, both in and out of the classroom. The Club, and the Swinomish Indian Tribal Community, recognized Otis and her family last Wednesday at a dinner at the Swinomish Yacht Club. The Swinomish Indian Tribal Community honored Otis that evening by presenting $5,000 to the Club: “Dixie Louise Oti...
From start to finish music played at Maple Hall, Civic Garden Club, in designated venues and anywhere a person could pick up a guitar and strum it: in a corner, a hallway, at exhibitor tables, the edge of Maple Hall’s stage, its three quiet rooms and the plaza outside. The third annual La Conner Guitar Festival was another smashing success, making everyone happy except, perhaps, the unexpecting tourists hoping for a quiet weekend before the summer rush. From Friday through Sunday La Conner w...
On Monday 20 students from La Conner High School took to the grass outside the elementary school with not one purpose, but many. Led by Samantha Nelson, a junior, students walked out during their first period class to protest not only what they considered to be an unsafe environment, but also the looming notion that their voices and opinions are seen as nothing more than trivial by district administrators. At 8:20 a.m. the 20 congregated in the Freshman Commons, and after quick deliberation, mad...
Saturday I ventured over to Friday Harbor to visit the San Juan Islands Art Museum exhibit, “My War: Wartime Photos by Viet Nam Veterans,” curated by Marissa Roth and June Berg. This was my first visit to the San Juan Museum of Art; I wasn’t sure what to expect but was quite pleased upon my arrival. The museum is intimate and divided into two galleries, each playing perfectly off the other to tell this story. The main gallery is quiet and somber, allowing this viewer time to reflect upon the s...
He was a versatile teacher, computer whiz, avid hiker, skilled mariner, world traveler, civic leader and handy man par excellence. Plus much, much more. Tom Winn never spoke about himself in such glowing terms. Always humble, he let others do the talking. And a week after his sudden passing, folks in La Conner are still sharing thoughts and reminiscences about the adventurous 73-year-old Winn, whom they describe as having been a modern renaissance man. “He saw life as an adventure,” Town Councilmember Jacques Brunisholz said of Winn. “A lot o...
I would like to invite anyone with the energy and smarts to file for local offices in La Conner. I would do it, but I am too old. The County Auditor is taking applications until 4:30 p.m. Friday. There is a $36 filing fee. We have two council positions open, those of Jacques Brunisholz and Mary Wohleb. The mayor’s position is also open. Here are some issues that have been overlooked but need some attention. Maybe one of them interests you. Taxes. I believe that, when a county taxing district disappears, the taxes that it used to collect should...
To Our Respected Shelter Bay Customers: The Town of La Conner is pleased to announce that the installation of the Town’s Phase 1 water main replacement project, which extends from Young Road to Mclean Road, has been successfully completed. The size of the line was determined by our engineer and will supply sufficient quantities of water to meet the needs of the Town and Shelter Bay. Phase 2 of the water main replacement, extending from Mclean Road to the La Conner roundabout, is not anticipated to be necessary for approximately 10 years. P...
Skagit County did not yet exist when the first issue of The Bellingham Bay Mail rolled of the presses in June 1873. The paper became the Puget Sound Mail after its 1878 move to La Conner. La Conner rightly claims the crown as the place where a newspaper has been published weekly for the longest continuous time in Washington. You might say the Weekly News is genuine. Newspapers are a Skagit County original – five years older than the county’s formation. This one proudly continues the Mail’s heritage. Now the La Conner Weekly News car...
