  • Quality government

    May 17, 2017

Local government is as good as the quality of our public officials, and the quality of the electorate. If you want better govern-ment, quality people need file for public office, and an enlightened electorate needs elect those who file for the right reasons; i.e. to serve, and not for the “title” or the “benefits”. Have you thought about enhancing your City Council, Mayor, School Board, Port Commission, Fire Commission, Drainage Commission, Ceme-tery Commission, etc.? Think about becoming involved in local government; as the quality of respect...

  • Swinomish contributions

    May 17, 2017

This year the Swinomish Tribe is contributing $150,000 to Fire District 13. That is $100,000 for fire and EMS/ambulance service to the Village, and $50,000 for providing the same service to Shelter Bay and Pull & Be Damned. Prior to the Great Wolf decision, the $100,000 for servicing the Village came from the Tribe’s general fund under a separate contract. For the past three years it has come from taxes collected from Shelter Bay and Pull & Be Damned. The Native Americans living in the Village do not pay taxes, so the taxpayers are funding fire...

  • Rumors can hurt people

    May 17, 2017

Remember the old telephone game where you whisper something into someone’s ear, it goes around the circle and the story comes out totally different from reality. Some people will hurt others by their vicious words with gossip and rumors. They have nothing better to do with their time. People who started businesses in town wants to fulfill their dreams. Sometimes life can get in the way. They don’t make it, or they get sick, of things happen in their lives. I have built my reputation in town for 8 years. From closing my coffee shop, I have hea...

An old man with Stage 4 cancer lives at the top of our apartment building in La Conner. It is a steep climb to his porch, but he manages. Someone else also managed this climb. This old man had just planted his flower garden in his Coffee Mug Planter, as he does each year. His choice of bright geraniums fill the cup and cheers him up. This morning he found the planter gone. The flowers thrown on the ground below. Whoever stole up the stairs and took his property will, never be found to confront with this petty theft, I know that. Maybe the...
