Controversial author and orator Elaine Willman held a workshop at Tequila Azteca Restaurant in Sedro-Woolley on Saturday, drawing about 80 people, mostly senior citizens, and a throng of protesters Willman, whose mother was an enrolled member of the Cherokee Nation, led a four-hour discussion on how she feels the political power and wealth of Native American tribes has grown to a point that is infringing on the rights of non-tribal members. • Search for new high school principal

    Maria Matson|May 24, 2017

La Conner High School and Middle School principal Cheryl Sullivan gave notice she’s resigning, effective June 30. Sullivan, who was hired two years ago, has not specifically stated why she is leaving but said “personal reasons” when reached for comment. The school district provided this newspaper with a copy of the email she sent in late April to announce her resignation, and no reason was given then in the brief message. The school board accepted her resignation at their most recent meeting, and now the search is on for someone to fill her p...

  • Diapers Drive

    May 24, 2017

I would like to thank all Skagit County communities for making the 2nd Annual Mother’s Day Diaper Drive a success. Donations of diapers were generous and dollars far exceeded those of last year. In January, the Diaper Bank reached a goal of delivering 1,000 diapers a week to WIC at Community Action of Skagit County. The Mother’s Day Drive will help us double that number, reaching more mother-baby pairs and giving more diapers. We are anxious to grow and extend services to other deserving agencies. Mother’s Day is a noteworthy time to hold...

Each summer we expand the hours of our visitor center therefore requiring additional help. This year has been especially tough and we have several shifts open. You don’t need to have lived here a lifetime to...

  • Shelter Bay lease

    May 24, 2017

In 1968, Allen Osberg, a Seattle construction company owner, negotiated a 75-year master lease with the Bureau of Indian Affairs to benefit the Swinomish tribe and tribal members. Osberg’s Shelter Bay Company marketed sub-leases for the developed lots, installed utilities and built community facilities and the marina. The master lease and individuals’ sub-leases will expire in 2044. At the end of the leases any improvements that are not removed will become the property of the BIA to manage on behalf of the tribe and tribal members. The She...

The fire gutted a home on Downey Road, and according to Fire District 13 Chief Roy Horn, the cause may have had something to do with the severe windstorms during the night. The Swinomish Tribe’s fishing fleet is clearly in no shortage of blessings, well-wishes and community respect, as displayed in the tribe’s traditional annual “blessing of the fleet ceremony” on Thursday.
