  • Swinomish constitution amendments approved

    Sandy Stokes|May 31, 2017

Swinomish Indian Tribal Community members approved the 29 proposed amendments to the tribal constitution, last week. While tribal elections are private and generally do not stir controversy outside the reservation community, provisions pertaining to territory and jurisdiction in the amended constitution have inspired a flood of letters to the U.S. Department of Interior, which has until July to approve the document. County officials, landowners, the agricultural community and taxpayers worried about what appears to be a move to extend the...

  • Two women badly injured in house fire

    Kane Stokes and Maria Matson|May 31, 2017

A fire that broke out at approximately 3:30 a.m. last Wednesday caused serious injuries to two La Conner area women who had to be air-lifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. The fire gutted a home on Downey Road, and according to Fire District 13 Chief Roy Horn, the cause may have had something to do with the severe windstorms during the night. On Tuesday, Deputy Fire Marshal Mark Anderson said the investigation is nearly complete and they believe the cause was an unextinguished candle,...

  • Fire District 13 board vacancy filled

    Sandy Stokes|May 31, 2017

Bruce Shellhamer couldn’t make it to the Fire District 13 Board of Commissioners meeting on Thursday when he was voted in unanimously to fill a vacancy on the board. Fire 13 Chief Roy Horn told commissioners Chuck Hedlund and Larry Kibbee that there had been five who expressed interest in filling the board seat left vacant last month when Commissioner Arne Fohn resigned. Horn endorsed Shellhamer, 60, for the position. A resident of the La Conner area for 2 years, Shellhamer lives in the Pull & Be Damned Road area and is a former pastor who n...

  • Reaction to Elaine Willman

    May 31, 2017

An article in last week’s La Conner News, “A lively workshop on property rights and tribal governments,” portrays the principal speaker, Elaine Willman, as a reasonable person who just wants tribes and the rest of us to get along. “Willman is not against Native American rights,” the article baldly states. Nothing could be further from the truth. Beneath her reasonable façade Willman is an anti-Native American extremist. She calls, emphatically, for the abolition of tribal sovereignty, and believes it is being used to destroy the U.S....

  • Elaine Willman workshop

    May 31, 2017

The La Conner Weekly News published two articles on the CAPR Elaine Willman Workshop in Sedro-Wolley Saturday, May 20. The first was fairly balanced. The other, on page 6…appeared to be a continuation but was an article on “activists” by another reporter. The activists in the article were those in disagreement with the “activists” inside. From what they say, it is clear that they don’t have an understanding of the position of those attending the workshop. The Weekly should give equal column space to a fuller explanation of why those fol...

La Conner seventh grader, Delaney Cobbs, has been wrestling competitively for over 6 years. That’s half your life when you are only 12 years old. Delaney’s long list of athletic accomplishments in that six years is very impressive considering her age. Earlier this month, Delaney took 3rd place at the Women’s Nationals Tournament in Tyler, Texas. Delaney competed in the 137-pound weight class Freestyle division. This tournament is a US National Team qualifying tournament, which means all high...

  • New principal for Middle and High schools

    Maria Matson|May 31, 2017

Her replacement—pending board approval—will be Todd Torgeson, currently an assistant principal at Sedro-Woolley High School but a familiar face in La Conner. During his 24-year long education career, Torgeson has previously worked for the La Conner School...
