Oh rats! Kevin Peterson, who has been a licensed pest control technician 30 years and is the general manager of Cascade Pest Control, says La Conner is especially prone to the critters. In the last 20 years, rat populations have spread themselves from the waterfront, out across the town and even across the channel into neighborhoods like Shelter Bay, Peterson said. Skagit County has also seen a recent case of Hantavirus, from which the resident has since recovered. Hantavirus is carried by rodent feces and urine, which can be accidently...
When Allen Sackett received his La Conner town water bill, he thought it was $12. It wasn’t until he opened it all the way he saw it was actually $812.32. “That’s crazy!” Sackett said. During the month of May, Sackett was fixing up the townhouse he had lived in for 15 years, getting it ready for sale. He said although he was not living there, while rebuilding the deck the longest gap he was gone during the month was two days. He said hadn’t used any water during May and “I checked every night,” Sackett said, to make sure nothing was left on....
La Conner has been home to a weekly newspaper since the 1870s and we are happy to assure our readers that La Conner Weekly News has many more years of life left with an infusion of new energy. Starting with this issue, the masthead on page two has a new name on top – Ken Stern is now at the publisher’s desk. After 10½ years running a mom & mom and then a grandma & grandma business, Sandy Stokes and Cindy Vest will now spend less time at their keyboards and more time with their h...
Short-handed La Conner was able to strong-arm its share of foes at summer basketball camp in Soap Lake. A makeshift Braves lineup won five games while building team chemistry going forward during a week-long stay in Eastern Washington. La Conner was hobbled – both literally and figuratively – when Harley Hulbert re-aggravated a knee injury and Scottie Miller and Trey Casey were delayed in arriving due to a crab season opening. To further complicate matters, Miller, an inside scoring presence, saw limited court time due to a...
Monday June 26 12:07 p.m.: Bumming a light – Somebody stole a bunch of cigarette lighters from the Shell station on La Conner Whitney Road and Hwy. 20 The thief fled and has since been identified. 4:55 p.m.: Be warned – A La Conner resident called to inform the police his ex-girlfriend might petition for a court order against him. Tuesday June 27 11:24 a.m.: Doggy despair – Somebody on Morris Street reported a possible case of dog neglect. 3:14 p.m.: Big rig connec-tion – Two semi-trucks were involved in an accident on...
Henry David Thoreau auspiciously and with forethought moved into his cabin at Walden Pond on July 4th. Some people locally may have heard that ahead of this July 4th the La Conner Weekly News changed hands, that Cindy Vest and Sandy Stokes turned over the paper’s ownership. That makes this July 4th a special celebration for them and for me, the News’ new publisher. Fireworks are appropriate to highlight and appreciate and thank Cindy and Sandy for their having created, nurtured, and built the La Conner Weekly News into the newspaper that it...
Hope you enjoyed your 4th of July, and honored our founding. Did you review the Declaration of Independence, which states, in part: “…all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights…..”? What does that mean? Unalienable rights are rights bestowed upon mankind by our Creator, as exposed by Cicero as Saxon nature law, which were granted us as inalienable rights in the Bill of Rights, U.S. Constitution. Are they absolute individual rights? Yes, ideally; but not practically: We are...
Today, I was honored to attend the Swinomish Awards Luncheon. I was there to accept the Swinomish Nation’s grant award toward the building of Conner Waterfront Park, which is the Park Commission’s featured project at the moment. The idea to take a place which was previously an industrial site, and develop instead a beautiful place for families of both La Conner and Swinomish Communities to enjoy on the waterfront, has inspired us to do furious fundraising. If you drive Conner Way under the bridge, you can see the many facilities now ava...
I just want to thank John Doyle for working to improve the efficiency of our town lighting by obtaining the grant to install LEDs. In addition to the efficiency, It’s wonderful to have direc-tional lighting that reduces the light pollution to our night skies created by the older lights. I think it’s a decent compromise for those who want town lit up, vs. those of us who prefer less light pollution. Not as nice as if we had sidewalk-only lighting, in my opinion, but I will happily embrace anything that offers me the chance to better see met...
