    Mary Wohleb is La Conner’s new town council member. Council member Stokes made the motion to appoint Wohleb after some 15 minutes of introductions, questions, and discussion with the three candidates. Wohleb is a 23 year resident and a member of the Town’s planning commission. She said representation of residents was needed. Council member Brunisholz seconded the motion, Mayor Hayes called for a vote, and council member Chamberlain voted yes. Council member Leaver chose to not vote.   • Pioneer Picnic in Pioneer Park August 3

    The 113th Annual Skagit County Pioneer Association Picnic and General Meeting is on August 3 at La Conner’s Pioneer Park. The celebration includes live music, an old car show, and historic pictures recognizing the Honored Families. Many “old-timers” are expected. The $12 cost registers attendees as pioneers and includes a ribbon, program, Historian’s memorial pamphlet and ticket for a barbecue salmon dinner for the 11:15 a.m. lunch.   • Fire District 12 seeks commissioner and direction

    The two remaining Fire District 12 commissioners put themselves on a limb at their meeting Monday. They were only freed when an attending citizen threw them a lifeline, and talked them down. Commissioners Dennis O’Hearn and Norm Jenkins could not agree to proceed. Jenkins questioned if the meeting was “legal,” based on a letter from the Skagit County Auditor’s office.
