  • Musings -- On the editor's mind

    Ken Stern|Aug 9, 2017

Since coming to La Conner I have truly learned what being rooted means. Whether Gail Thulen telling me that when his grandson graduates from WSU and comes home he will be the family’s sixth generation farmer or Bobbi Krebs reflecting on her grandmother’s coming around 1903, or hearing Wallaces remember their family’s arrival that same year, clearly Skagit Valley roots run deep. Across the country these are classic American stories. My American story couldn’t be more different. Yet it is just as classical. I haven’t been in La Conner two month...

  • What's up with the weather?

    Haley Ausbun|Aug 9, 2017

Tuesday marked the longest number of consecutive days on record that Seattle has been without rain since 1951. While La Conner encountered a light shower July 20, it was not considered measurable precipitation. Extreme dry heat is affecting most of Western Washington, but the smoky haze from the wildfires in British Columbia and the Chuckanut Mountains, has saved La Conner from the high temperatures seen in other communities. That haze comes at a price: Last week the Skagit County Public Health...

  • Skagit pioneers beat historic heat at annual picnic

    Bill Reynolds and Haley Ausbun|Aug 9, 2017

It was a made in the shade kind of day in La Conner on Thursday. Good thing, too. That’s because a historic heat wave coupled with hazy conditions from Canadian wildfires was the backdrop for the 113th annual Pioneer Picnic. Former Anacortes Police Chief Bonnie Bowers, who earlier in her career patrolled La Conner, was among the honored guests. Bowers joined more than 200 people gathered at Pioneer Park to enjoy sockeye salmon barbecued by La Conner’s “Good Girls” and provided by members...

    Bill Reynolds|Aug 9, 2017

The road to the NBA for Derek Willis included a side trip to La Conner this week. The 6’-9” University of Kentucky product held a two-day camp August 7 and 8 for local youth at Landy James Gym, showcasing the skillset that endeared him to legendary Wildcats coach John Calipari the past four years. Willis, who recently inked a deal with the Detroit Pistons, served as headliner for an event coordinated by La Conner High alum Greg Edwards of the Swinomish Youth Center. Boys and girls from kin...

  • From the editor -- War and Peace

    Ken Stern|Aug 9, 2017

Seventy-two years ago today, August 9, 1945, the last atomic bomb ever used was dropped on Nagasaki. On this date, during this week, doesn’t every patriotic, heart-sensitive citizen take pause on yet another anniversary of our dropping atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki? Especially if you live in the Pacific Northwest, where so many of our neighbors have Japanese ancestry? Do we, deep down inside, realize the difference between winning and peace? Do we get that being the strongest only ensures entanglement and hated? Who remembers the s...
