    Ken Stern|Aug 16, 2017

Homeowners and businesses in Fire District 13 can lower their fire insurance premiums with the District earning a Protection Class 6 fire rating. This gain from its Class 7 rating became effective August 1. It is based on an audit last winter from the Washington Surveying and Rating Bureau, WSRB, which underwrites property and provides fire protection ratings for the insurance industry. “Each rate dropping saves some $150, average, in insurance premiums,” said Roy Horn, chief of Skagit County Fire District 13. “We’ve dropped from eight to six i...

  • Festive Swinomish Days was round-the-clock attraction

    Bill Reynolds|Aug 16, 2017

It was billed as Swinomish Days. But the Tribal weekend cultural celebration could well have been promoted as Swinomish Days AND Nights. A bevy of free admission events often spilled into the night, including the always popular canoe races on Swinomish Channel. “We’re kind of burning daylight here,” Swinomish Tribal Senate chair Brian Cladoosby, who live-streamed and offered commentary on the races, said as dusk approached Saturday night. “They’ll be pulling (canoes) in the dark, but we’ll get...

The summer season gives many a chance to be outdoors where...

The national news of the federal interagency report detailing significant effects of climate change in the United States now is cause for concern here in La Conne...

  • Musings - on the editor's mind

    Ken Stern|Aug 16, 2017

Kids moving out and parents empty-nesting it, consider this advice: Allow plenty of time for downsizing. When I planned my move, I knew I needed time for packing, loading and cleaning. I failed totally to consider the herculean task of downsizing. That cost me dearly: I left three days later than planned. Files, mostly, weighed me down. Every sheet of paper, back to the 1970s, had to be touched and often read. Significant time suck. But significant gifts, also. I found a short article from a 1990s coworker. Titled “The Nine Most Important W...
