Now that the Skagit County Assessor’s Office has crunched the actual numbers, it is apparent that the federal court’s tribal land tax ruling would hit La Conner worse than originally thought. Dave Thomas with the Assessor’s Office said that if the ruling stands, there will be a total of 931 properties taken off the tax rolls with a combined value of about $138 million. That is the number and value of homes on leased tribal land in Shelter Bay and in the Pull & Be Damned neighborhood — the only area in Skagit County that the federal rulin...
La Conner School District’s “report card” from the state shows that the high school and middle school received passing grades, but La Conner Elementary School was deemed to be underperforming. The scores, based on student performance two years ago, were released this week by the Washington Policy Center, which calls itself a non-partisan think tank. Both the middle and high school were rated “good” in the same report. State reports since 2011 show the state’s rating of the elementary school slowly declining, even though test scores were improv...
Portions of the La Conner boardwalk were closed last weekend and will likely be closed for the next week or two because the town must replace the decking material. The town blocked access to the sections of boardwalk in front of Nell Thorn Restaurant and in front of the old Palmer’s restaurant building because the composite decking material installed last winter was found to be faulty. La Conner Mayor Ramon Hayes said that the material could develop cracks. The two spots that are closed have been deemed the most troublesome. The manufacturer i...
Long-time La Conner resident Rita Hupy died on the evening of Thursday, August 7, at age 84. She did not suffer at the end, and I thank the staff at Island Hospital for their kind care of her. She truly was ready to go, and we should be as thankful as she was. She was preceded in death by her husband Art Hupy, and a brother and a sister. She is survived by three sons, 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was a caring parent, a loving wife, a good friend to very many and always an...
Raymond C Thompson of La Conner died on Thursday, August 7 at age 66. He was born on May 24, 1948 to Rudy and Betty Thompson in a home that Studebaker built in Mishawaka, Indiana. Ray earned the better part of a Comparative Literature degree from Indiana State University before joining the culture wars raging outside. Traveling with his tool belt and guitar, Ray followed work to Odessa, Texas, Palm Springs, California and Chena Hot Springs, Alaska until finally arriving in La Conner in 1979,...
An 8-inch water pipe burst underground Monday night, flooding the south end of La Conner’s Third Street near Pioneer Park and leaving Shelter Bay faucets dry. Witnesses said the blowout occurred at around 8:30 p.m. The town’s Public Works crew spent the rest of the night digging up the street to replace a section of pipe and restore service to residents in Shelter Bay. The water was back on before noon, though some residents reported lower pressure and murky water in the pipes, likely due to...
