  • Capturing cats complex

    Aug 21, 2019

While I applaud the activism of young Ms. Jones in caring about our feral cat population, her letter in last week’s Weekly News raised serious concerns. After speaking with NOAH, I learned that they have made no formal agreement with Ms. Jones to provide the services stated in her letter. The Town of La Conner was likewise unaware of this ambitious plan and it seems at odds with the current municipal code. Many cats in my neighborhood are collarless yet have homes and families who love them. Not everyone has their pet micro-chipped. Pet o...

  • Rotary club auction spells success on behalf of literacy

    Bill Reynolds|Aug 21, 2019

La Conner Rotarians closed the book on another major fundraiser in support of student literacy and scholarships Saturday night. And this time it was a feel-good story if there ever was one. The local service club’s 13th annual Harvesting Hope Auction at Maple Hall raised over $60,000 to help “shine a light on literacy,” a campaign further highlighted when Janna Gage of Seaport Books was honored during the event as La Conner Rotary’s 2019 Paul Harris Award recipient. The Paul Harris Fellow progra...

  • Reps Paul and Smith agree to disagree

    Ken Stern|Aug 21, 2019

People living in the 10th State Senate District are fortunate to have two kind, considerate representatives who are working hard to advance the district’s interests through their strong working relationship. In Skagit County, people are fortunate to have a strong League of Women Voters chapter that organized a forum Aug 12, bringing Reps. Dave Paul (D, Oak Harbor) and Norma Smith (R, Clinton) to face 75 people in the Skagit PUD meeting room in Mount Vernon. Everyone participating proved A...

  • New co-owners at home at Nell Thorn

    Ken Stern|Aug 21, 2019

New Nell Thorn co-owner and chef James Donahue has a simple ambition for greater success for the signature restaurant: make it known statewide, though he realizes that won’t happen overnight. The soon-to-be-30-years-old executive chef understands the opportunity in front of him. He and Albie Bjornberg are partners in Nell Thorn with Ted Furst, owner of Le Grand Bistro Américain in Kirkland. Furst is the majority partner, but Donahue and Bjornberg are at Nell’s full time. Furst comes up on...

  • School staff insist on new superintendent

    Aug 21, 2019

August 19, 2019 La Conner teachers and support staff have the best interest of our students at heart, which is why we continue to firmly believe that our school district needs a new superintendent. Last week the La Conner School Board issued an open letter regarding the vote of no confidence against Superintendent Meissner. The leadership of the La Conner Education Association and Public School Employees unions were pleased to see the board accept responsibility for responding too slowly to this critical situation. However, we were...

  • Stasis, stubbornness, stuckness spell trouble

    Ken Stern|Aug 21, 2019

Both sides in the La Conner School district turmoil agree that the administration has, at the least, not done a good job in their job of managing the staff or communicating clearly to them or to the community. Superintendent Whitney Meissner has acknowledged that she has not brought unity to the district and community. The school board realizes it took too long to respond to staff at summer’s start. The administration side hopes to repair the damage by commitments to empathy and relationship building. The unions, teachers and support staff, f...

  • Homelessness: Intractable

    Ken Stern|Aug 21, 2019

Painful stories of trauma are at the heart of the homeless crisis found in most every community in our country. Job loss, health emergencies, domestic violence, substance abuse or physical, emotional or mental health problems put neighbors, family members or friends out of their homes and on the street, said Jennifer Johnson, Skagit County Department of Public Health director, in introductory remarks Monday at a forum on homelessness organized by the League of women Voters of Skagit County and t...
