  • Eclipse shared by generations

    Robin Carneen|Aug 23, 2017

Swinomish Tribal Member, Cassandra Gonzales made sure her eight-year-old daughter Aaliyah Gonzales had the proper ISO approved glasses to watch the historic Solar Eclipse. Aaliyah was the very first participant to show up at the John K. Bob baseball field at 7:30 a.m. on the Swinomish Reservation. Swinomish Elder Ray Mitchell and his wife Jennie, along with nearly 60 other people, mostly Tribal employees, their families and various community members joined Aaliyah throughout the morning....

  • Noses for news

    Ken Stern|Aug 23, 2017

Letters to the editor are important. Thank God for attentive readers. You are the eyes and ears of the town, not me. If I did stop at every bar and coffee shop every day I would only skim the surface of La Conner reality. Are there questions about the Port’s marina whose answers need to be found out? I don’t know. Now I know to start asking questions. If there are critical answers they’ll get printed in the paper. Lights on the bridge. Good idea. Careful readers know the County pays the electrical bill. Lobbying for funds for paying the bill...

  • Musings -- on the editor's mind

    Ken Stern|Aug 23, 2017

When did you first sense it? What was your first experience of summer’s passing? What brought your attention to the season’s changing? Several people have told me fall is in the air. I live on Valentine Road so see the Cascades on the Valley’s east side every morning. Last week the marine fog hanging on them was the first I saw since I was here in March. That was a welcome replacement of the smoke from the Canadian fires. But my first fall notice was an end of summer sensation. Walking on Third Street toward the marina August 10, I stopp...

  • Local news means local

    Aug 23, 2017

Dear Editor: This letter is in response to the comment you made in your article titled, “My Country, My World, Near and Far.” In your article you make the rhetorical statement that, “Maybe you are asking why the editor of your small-town paper is writing about atomic bombs, endless war, and climate change.” Well, aside from whatever personal drive you may have to become a national journalistic figure, yes, I am kind’a curious. You see, probably like most people, what I’d really like to know about from my local newspaper editor isn’t his o...

  • Pow wow news

    Aug 23, 2017

Wow! What great coverage of the Swinomish Pow Wow last week. Nearly the entire front page. It was unfortunate that we couldn’t have had just a fraction of that coverage pre-event the week before. Perhaps a public invitation from the Tribe describing the event could have been made. More of us might have attended had we known what was going on. It’s particularly unfortunate that the Tribe did not extend a personal invitation to the Shelter Bay Community (Maybe via the monthly newsletter?). We are, after all, their reservation neighbors and Lea...

  • Eclipse covered by community correspondents

    Aug 23, 2017

Bruce Bradburn reports from Sun Valley, Idaho that as the eclipsed past 30 percent, bird song and presence ceased and the wind stopped completely. The temperature dropped a full 15 degrees. He reflected that “these phenomena, which may seem to be completely understandable to technologically-aware modern man had to have made the ancients most-likely terrified. However, even with current understanding, that event was no less magical and awe-inspiring....

  • Flag and football

    Aug 23, 2017

Dear Mr. Michael Bennett, Mr. Bennett, you have offended me. Others feel as I do, and I hope they also show their disdain for your actions. I was and remain a United States Marine. I proudly stand tall for the United States of America when any of its symbols are displayed. You see I served with those that fought and gave their lives for our flag, our anthem, our country, and yes, our freedom. Having visited Arlington Cemetery, I have seen our bravest being laid to rest, and honored with a flag draped coffin while Taps sounded the final note to...
