  • Dredging to start on south end of channel

    The Port of Skagit has been notified that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is funding $820,750 to dredge the south end of Swinomish Channel. The Corps has contracted with American Construction Co., Inc, which was the same contractor for the dredging done last year. This year’s project is expected to start in late September and wind up around Christmas. The work will be confined to the south end of the channel, where silt accumulates the quickest.     Development plans for La Conner’s new waterfront park are moving full steam ahead, with town officials working hard to secure grants for the project. Conner Waterfront Park will encompass the 600-foot stretch of land between Pioneer Park and the Swinomish Channel.     Vickie Robert Mesman, 54, died peacefully on Monday, August 18, surrounded by family at Skagit Valley Hospital. Vickie, the only girl of six children, was born in Yakima, Washington to Victor and Martha Robert. She was raised on the family sheep ranch in Sunnyside, Washington, where she was active in 4-H and FFA throughout her youth. She graduated from Sunnyside High School in 1978 and went on to receive degrees in Agricultural Education and General Agriculture from Washington State University....

We thank and praise God for His promises of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ that assures us she is rejoicing in heaven with those who have gone before her!   • Film crew draws onlookers, stops traffic

    Camera crews were causing traffic detours in La Conner this week for filming of the movie La Conner PD, written by local restaurant owner Guy Vallee. The movie takes place in La Conner during the late 1970s, and stars Guy’s brother Pete Vallee, better known as “Big Elvis” on the Strip in Las Vegas. Other local talent includes restaurant owner John Vargas, Mayor Ramon Hayes, and a Renault LeCar painted just like the ones the La Conner Police Department had in the 70s. Filming began on Monda...
