  • Diaper Bank passes 250,000 out

    Aug 28, 2019

Community support and awareness has allowed the Diaper Bank of Skagit County (DBSC) to distribute a quarter million diapers to low income families since 2017. The cost has been minimal; less than 10 cents per diaper. This compares to 28 cents at COSTCO and over 40 cents for financially strapped families that purchase small packages. The founder, my wife, Calista Scott is a retired maternity nurse who saw the desperation in mothers while volunteering at the Sunrise food Bank and wanted to help. In 2016 she attended the National Diaper Bank...

  • Cats on the loose

    Aug 28, 2019

While I feel this could be a good idea, I certainly hope you don’t end up taking someone’s pet (“Help reduce feral cat population,” Aug. 14 Letters). Some cats are not microchipped but are someone’s beloved pet. If you trap any animals due diligence is asking people of that neighborhood if it belongs to them before you turn them in to NOAH. • A letter I should not need to write

    Aug 28, 2019

My country is under attack. I cannot remain silent any longer. The words and actions of some of my fellow Americans are viciously tearing at the fabric of this Republic. Every day I hear, see, and read about the hatred, unfounded accusations, venomous attitudes, unfounded blame and distortions from citizens, including even some from Congress. President Trump is NOT a racist. There has been nothing he has said or done that even mildly suggests he is. But the propaganda machines (once known as news outlets) know how to frenzy up the populace...

  • Staff unions say La Conner school superintendent threatened lawsuit

    Ken Stern|Aug 28, 2019

Suzann Keith dropped a bombshell at the Sunday fundraising celebrating Georgia Johnson [see “Johnson,” below]: Superintendent Whitney Meissner made threats “if the school board severed her contract, she would sue for $800,000,” the value of her three year contract. The La Conner English teacher and her union’s communications specialist was summarizing an Aug. 5 meeting to the attendees, the most recent exchange in the summer’s communications and meetings with the superintendent and the school board. The La Conner Education and Public Scho...

  • Family, friends fete Fred Mesman on milestone birthday

    Bill Reynolds|Aug 28, 2019

On the radio dial, 95 is often the golden oldies station. For La Conner’s Fred Mesman, the number 95 sends a totally different signal. Sunday it had less to do with his age than it did with being a good reason for the sage nonagenarian to party. Which is exactly what he did, enjoying birthday cake, music and a bountiful pig roast on a beautiful sunlit afternoon complete with spectacular views from his and wife Arlene’s unique straw bale insulated Pleasant Ridge home. But more than anything, Fre...

  • Barn fills for fundraiser at Georgia Johnson's table

    Ken Stern|Aug 28, 2019

Truth in advertising was on display Sunday at the Andrew Johnson family farm barn on Beaver Marsh Road. Over 110 people came for an old-fashioned country pot luck, challenged to bring dishes matching the BBQ ribs, corn on the cob, spot prawns, baked potato bar and fruit crisps provided by or overseen by Georgia Johnson, chef, caterer, bakery owner and for 16 years food services director at La Conner schools. Billed as “There’s Always a Seat at Georgia’s Table: A Celebration!.” it was that, a...

  • Harvest season underway as Labor Day approaches

    Aug 28, 2019

‘IS THIS THE BEST WAY WE CAN GROW OUR GOOD FRUIT?’ – Saturday and Sunday workers were harvesting pumpkins for Michelle Youngquist’s farm at La Conner Whitney and McLean Roads. Monday is Labor Day, a time to rest and recognize all workers. Here’s hoping that these and all farm laborers in the Valley get time off. Lyrics by Woodie Guthrie. – Photo by Ken Stern...

  • WHIT HANSEN

    Aug 28, 2019

Whit was born in Seattle on November 6, 1930, to Willard Milton Hansen and Marjorie Whitney Hansen; he passed away at his home in La Conner on August 2, 2019, surrounded by his loving family. Whit grew up on Hunts Point in Bellevue, WA, where he learned to love everything about being on the water; boating, camping, swimming, water skiing, and fishing. He graduated from Bellevue High School in 1948, where he excelled academically and in sports. He accepted an appointment to the United States...

  • Two students now on school board

    Ken Stern|Aug 28, 2019

The La Conner School District Board of Directors doubled the high school student representation on the Board to two, approving Yareli Lopez and Domenic Wilbur to start their year-long term in September. They approved raises of 3.8% for the five administrators. For seven exempt employees, raises ranged from 2.1% to 18.4%. Documents are on the school district website. They accepted $5,000 from the Town of La Conner to support the after schools Braves Club and approved an agreement with the Swinomish Department of Environmental Protection for...

  • Homelessness: our common burden

    Ken Stern|Aug 28, 2019

Is homelessness in our community, in La Conner, Skagit County, the state of Washington and throughout the United States intractable? County school superintendents and their staff agreed that is what they, and we, face every day, whether at school or on a street corner. At the August 19 forum on homelessness and its impact on children and schools organized by Skagit County’s League of Women Voters and the chapter of School Retirees of Skagit-San Juan-Island Counties, 110 people gathered to consider how county school districts are managing. T...
