  • New La Conner Schools chief wraps up busy summer

    Bill Reynolds|Aug 30, 2017

The doctor is in. And has been all summer, putting in long hours to master a steep learning curve as the new Superintendent of La Conner Schools. Dr. Whitney Meissner has taken a rain check on the traditional laid-back school vacation schedule, instead cramming on a wide range of policy, finance, and curriculum matters unique to the local district since her July 1 start. She has had to be a quick study. Meissner was hired earlier this year to succeed interim superintendent Peg Seeling, who...

  • Local color - Family love runs The Pub

    Judy Booth|Aug 30, 2017

Julie and Sherry Lennartz weren’t even teenagers when their father, Gene, bought the La Conner Pub & Eatery, called “The Tavern” by locals. Known as Gentlemen Gene, he was an engineer with Boeing when that company had problems in the early 1970s. He moved his family to La Conner, where his wife’s family, the Moores, lived. Grandfather Milo Moore was the Mayor of La Conner as well as the head of the Washington State Department of Fisheries. Earlier, he worked for the United Nations in fisheries i...

    Ken Stern|Aug 30, 2017

Moving to La Conner, new to the community, starting work July 1st, in charge of the entire operation, a chance to channel 25 years of training, experience, past successes into practice as the chief executive office, what a rare opportunity. She has an open door policy, and it’s not just for faculty, staff, students, and parents. She wants to hear from the community. Take her up on it. Speaking with her, you will hear her champion e...

  • Musings -- on the editor's mind

    Ken Stern|Aug 30, 2017

I have always admired people with skills and talents able to express themselves on the piano or guitar, who build furniture out of salvaged wood, who repair cars or renovate boats. The camera or paintbrush or hammer and saw becomes an extension of themselves. Their avocation fills their time and bring them joy. Earning income is not the issue. Job work is not life’s sole purpose. Personal satisfaction is. They are at ease, have some peace. Not me. I have always strived to combine vocation and avocation. I never matched them for long. I never c...

  • Colin Kaepernick, a brave patriot

    Aug 30, 2017

Regarding Dick Nord’s letter to the editor last week: I agreed with everything he said, but not quite as strongly. I’m 90 years old and have been a strong 49er supporter from their start many years ago. They had a 20-year dynasty in the 70s and 80s, but it finally ended. It wasn’t until Colin Kaepernick came along and took the 49ers all the way back to the Super Bowl that their dignity was restored. I fell in love with Kaepernick: As an adopted child he grew into a great athlete, setting gridiron records that may never be broken . He has led a...

  • Agree: Local is local

    Aug 30, 2017

I must agree with Lou Keller. I was very hesitant in keeping my subscription, but thought I’d give you a chance. I don’t want to hear about anything other than what’s going on in my Community. In my beloved little town La Conner. If I want to hear what’s happening outside of the Community, I’ll search for it. We are a small tight Com-munity that wants our paper to stay Local. Best of Luck, Renata Bos...

  • New school year, new faces, new hopes

    Ken Stern|Aug 30, 2017

School’s no longer out for summer. Today, August 30, is the first day of school for students of the La Conner School District. It is also the first school day for Dr. Whitney Meissner, the new superintendent of the district. Same for Todd Torgeson, middle and high school principal. In fact, it is the first day of school for at least 18 faculty and staff members new to this school district. At least four additional employees are in new positions from last spring. The schools have some 582 students enrolled. At the August 28 school board meeting,...
