  • Trump's deeds his legacy

    Sep 4, 2019

It is understandable that Nancy Burlison (viewpoint, Aug. 28) thinks Donald Trump is not a racist . . . however, he publicly aligns his beliefs and actions with those of his base, which is perhaps, the source of an accurate racist accusation. The members of his base are many things including: racists, homophobic, anti-choice and climate deniers. Our elected officials are what they say and do publicly, not what they might otherwise believe privately. Barbera Brooks Fir Island...

  • What a year!

    Sep 4, 2019

We moved to La Conner last September and can’t believe a year has gone by already. And what a year it has been! Early on we fell in love with the town, the area and the people. We went to the Halloween parade, Christmas tree lighting, watched the decorated boats cruise down the slough and many other events. We drove down many roads just to see where they went, but most of all we met many wonderful friendly people. But I must say when we thought it couldn’t get any getter, it did! We have been going to the Sunday afternoon music and dancing in...

  • Truth with Trump is relative

    Sep 4, 2019

This letter is in response to Nancy Burlison’s “A letter I should not need to write” that appeared in the August 28 issue. First of all, our democracy depends on a free press that adheres to honest, in-depth reporting, fact-checking and the goal of presenting both sides of an issue. There are many hard working journalists and news agencies doing just that. I recently read that Trump is disappointed in Fox News for interviewing a Democrat on one of its shows. With his war on the media, Trump appears to be promoting state run news agencies that...

  • Council's affordable housing resolution sends funds to county

    Ken Stern|Sep 4, 2019

La Conner’s Town Council passed a resolution Aug. 27 that allows tapping the state sales tax for affordable housing. The “resolution of intent” declaring Council will adopt an ordinance by next July passed 5-0. Local governments in Skagit County and across the state are passing these resolutions ahead of a January deadline, prompted by new state legislation, SHB 1406. La Conner’s sale tax credit will go into a Skagit County pool for building new affordable housing. At its Aug. 13 meeting Council passed Councilmember Jacques Brunish...

  • New principal embraces canoe journey spirit of pulling together

    Bill Reynolds|Sep 4, 2019

It was while selling doors for a living that Heather Fakkema realized doors were also opening for her to pursue a career in school administration. She had by then already spent two years as a teacher before stepping away from the classroom to start a family and engage in several other ventures, including a children’s ministry. The light bulb flicked on during her time with a family-owned window and door distribution firm in Seattle. Business management introduced Fakkema to concepts her t...

  • Goal-oriented Braves soccer team aiming for opener

    Bill Reynolds|Sep 4, 2019

The season hasn’t started, but the La Conner High boys’ soccer team has already met a key goal. A deep lineup now tops the completed side of new head coach Galen McKnight’s to-do list. Himself a former Braves standout, McKnight scored big-time when he was able to build a pre-season roster of 25 players, including a large group of freshmen plus varsity basketball players Charles Baker, Elijah Porter and Ashley Davis all making their soccer debuts. “With those numbers,” he explained, “practice...

  • La Conner youth football league geared up for games

    Bill Reynolds|Sep 4, 2019

The future is now for La Conner football. Youth league players who someday hope to fill the ranks of La Conner High’s grid program have kicked off yet another season of their own. And done so in divine fashion. The La Conner juniors, coached by Charlie Edwards, Sonny James and Kyle Ryan, defeated Concrete 6-0 with a Hail Mary pass as time expired in the team’s recent season opener. “It was pretty amazing,” said Edwards, who is also the league’s vice president. The winning play was set up by a Co...

  • Go see the stars of 'Broadway Bound'

    Ken Stern|Sep 4, 2019

Gramps (Ben Honeycutt) is that stereotypical 1940s family patriarch in Brighton Beach, an immigrant Brooklyn neighborhood. If Scandinavian, Croatian, Finnish or German, Gramps would be right at home on an Anacortes-based fishing boat or a Cascades-foothills logging camp. And so Neil Simon, that master of American innocuous domestic comedy (“The Odd Couple,” “Barefoot in the Park,” and 30 other plays and 30-plus more movies), finishes telling his origin story in “Broadway Bound,” opening Friday at Whidbey Playhouse in Oak Harbor. This final...

  • Governor penny foolish on campaign security expenses

    Ken Stern|Sep 4, 2019

Gov. Jay Inslee has done a good job of advancing Washington state’s needs during boom times. He has been forward thinking and brave, pushing tax increases through the legislature this year and championing a carbon tax to reduce green house gases generations. His commitment to saving the planet from the ravages of climate-based catastrophes led him to run for president. The governor is entitled to be ambitious. He has taken his message across the country. Most of the $2.4 million he raised in donations of under $200 came from some 12,000 p...

  • Trump's history a fact

    Sep 4, 2019

After reading the column last week from Nancy Burlison, I pondered whether to respond or not. Mostly I thought to let the article speak for itself, for as such, it speaks volumes, mostly about the condition of our society today. Hate is a subject that seems to occupy much of Ms. Burlison’s thoughts. Unable to hear Mr. Trump’s hateful thoughts about African-Americans, Hispanics, Muslims, Arabs, disabled people and women who fail to meet his standard of attractiveness, she blames others for tearing our country apart. Yet, despite her den...
