  • School district enrollment up 61 students

    It may or may not be crowded at La Conner’s elementary and high school buildings, but there are 22 more elementary students and 19 more high school students this year than last year. The school district counted 586 students enrolled in its report to the state’s Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction. That tops last year’s 543 students by 43, an eight percent increase.     School is open for you to visit. Your invitation to talk to teachers and staff includes dinner. On September 20 everyone is invited to a community dinner at La Conner’s elementary school at 4:30 p.m. From 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. the elementary school hosts its open house. The middle and high school open house runs from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Among the vendors encouraging education in our community will be La Conner’s Library.     Long time town administrator John Doyle will retire November 30. Doyle’s departure, and the process for replacing him, was discussed during the mayor’s roundtable of the September 12 town council meeting. Doyle’s retirement was not a surprise: Mayor Ramon Hayes announced at the Fir Log Park timeline dedication September 6th that Doyle had informed him the week before.
