  • Council started 2022 budget discussion early Tuesday

    Ken Stern|Sep 15, 2021

La Conner Town Council members did double duty Tuesday, starting at 5 p.m. with a special meeting to discuss the public works and wastewater treatment plant sections of the 2022 budget. Council was sent a 16 page special meeting packet Friday, Sept. 10, with a five page memo from Town Administrator Scott Thomas addressing near term “necessary” improvements to the Town’s wastewater treatment plant. It had five sections: a. regulatory overview; b. nutrients; c. expansion and replacement; d. next steps; and e. costs. Following were nine pages...

  • FD 13 approves staff vaccine mandate policy

    Bill Reynolds|Sep 15, 2021

The COVID-19 pandemic caused a year-long decline in emergency service calls for Skagit County Fire District 13 near La Conner. Those call numbers have finally begun to rebound, outpacing 2020 levels, and now fire district personnel themselves are to be on the receiving end of health care services in the form of mandatory coronavirus vaccinations. District Commissioners Bruce Shellhamer and John Doyle last Friday approved a COVID-19 vaccine mandate for the district’s health care providers. The policy follows Gov. Jay Inslee’s Aug. 9 pro...

  • La Conner alum leading in locating boarding school burial sites

    Bill Reynolds|Sep 15, 2021

As a La Conner High student in the late 1990s, she was shy and introspective, a teen apt to shun the limelight save once when called upon to sing a solo in a campus stage play. These days, Kisha Supernant – now Dr. Kisha Supernant – has become one of the most widely recognized leaders in her field, the subject of numerous TV, radio and print media interviews in the U.S. and Canada this summer alone. Supernant, an archaeologist, has worked with indigenous communities to locate human...

  • Paying the price of building the future

    Ken Stern|Sep 15, 2021

Last night La Conner’s town council met an hour early to discuss the town’s 2022 budget, which they will pass in December. They started with the big-ticket items: the sewer system and wastewater treatment plant and the parks, facilities, streets, water and drainage infrastructure that public works manages. None of this is glamorous, as much as President Biden and Congress have talked about it this year. It is expensive at every level, and more expensive than local and state governments can handle on their own. Last year La Conner budgeted alm...

  • Carlson for council

    Sep 15, 2021

We are writing in support of Ivan Carlson for Town Council, Position 2. Ivan lives a few doors down from us. In the Sept. 1 issue of this paper, it was mentioned that Ivan advocated for better signage on Maple Street at the Aug. 24 town council meeting. He also provided flags for the crosswalk at Maple and Caledonia. It has already yielded improved safety for our family. It is a great first (but hopefully not last) step. We appreciate folks that listen, but we strongly admire people who act. It is especially admirable since Ivan had no...

  • Letter condemns without compassion

    Sep 15, 2021

Ken, I want you to know I completely support your editorials and articles and I was appalled at the content of Mr. Hageman’s letter. He succeeded in demonstrating the epitome of what the ultra-conservative represent. I did not see any reference to what he felt Trump did right to help our country, rather he just condemned our current administration with all the same accusations we have been hearing for years. Keep up the good work and don’t let those who wish to keep our people at odds rather than learn compassion, compromise and respect for...

  • Learn facts and history

    Sep 15, 2021

In last week’s La Conner Weekly News Randy Hageman mocked the qualifications and political positions of U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio Cortez. Mr. Hageman also belittled her work as a bartender, as if working class folks are unworthy to serve in Congress. He is dead wrong on all counts. AOC was not elected because of her “charm and charisma” (though she has plenty of each). She is a graduate of Boston University, cum laude, with a double degree in international relations and economics and served as an intern on Ted Kennedy’s staff....

  • Embracing our families here and in Afghanistan

    Father William Treacy|Sep 15, 2021

The dictionary, in its definitions of family, includes “all those descended from a common ancestor.” During my years as a priest I have become acquainted with hundreds and hundreds of families. Many were happy and united. Others were devastated by the death of a parent, by illness, financial needs, by alcohol or drugs. What inspired me was how some families coped with problems. The family members all joined in caring for an elderly parent or caring for a sick member for whatever reason. Much depends on everyone according to the family in whi...

  • Jacques, thanks for council service

    Glen Johnson|Sep 15, 2021

Thank you, Jacques. The giving of all this time to your community is more than commendable. Towns of any size are not easy to manage. Council members are challenged every day to do their due diligence and make the best decisions they can. Some are extremely challenging, while others are easy, or at least somewhat so. Your concern about the ring dike is completely justified. We are the lowest lying town around, so without this dike we could realistically get washed into the slough. Yeah, I appreciate your tenacity. It is not an easy subject to...

  • Shelter Bay car prowls investigated

    Bill Reynolds|Sep 15, 2021

It’s often said that crime doesn’t take a holiday. That was certainly the case locally as Swinomish Tribal Police received reports of 10 vehicle prowls in Shelter Bay over the Labor Day weekend. “From reviewing the reports,” Swinomish Police Chief Earl Cowan told the Weekly News Sept. 7, “it appears that every case involved a vehicle that had been left unlocked overnight.” Cowan said Swinomish Police encourage everyone to lock their vehicles and remove any valuables for the night. “Or at least,” added Cowan, “hide them out of sight so they are...

  • La Conner volleyball team debuts with two big wins

    Bill Reynolds|Sep 15, 2021

Idled by the COVID-19 pandemic a year ago, the two-time defending state 2B champion La Conner High School volleyball team couldn’t wait to get back in the gym this fall. And when that time came last week, the Lady Braves got back to business by making short work of 2A foe Sehome and NW2B rival Darrington with twin straight-sets victories to open the 2021 net campaign. Ellie Marble delivered 20 kills and Emma Keller fueled the attack with 30 assists to lead a 25-11, 25-6, 25-20 rout of Sehome last Tuesday at Landy James Gym. Marble added 15 k...

  • Braves blanked by Sultan in non-league grid opener

    Bill Reynolds|Sep 15, 2021

The Sultan Turks shut out La Conner 21-0 in non-league football action at Whittaker Field Friday night. But despite the zero on the scoreboard, first-year Braves head coach Charlie Edwards said all wasn’t lost for his young club in their home test with an undefeated 1A Emerald Sound Conference foe that was coming off a 50-42 win over Evergreen of Seattle the week before. “It was a hard-fought game,” Edwards told the Weekly News afterward. “Our young players stepped up and did great. “We los...

  • Skagit County Historical Museum, staff recognized

    Bill Reynolds|Sep 15, 2021

Though the Skagit County Historical Museum in La Conner is focused on the past, it finds itself very much in the public eye these days as well. That’s because the local museum garnered a major statewide award this month and a member of its staff was tabbed to provide vocal solos at a recent Seattle Mariners game. The museum is recipient of a Washington Museum Association Award of Excellence in Exhibits for its recent exhibit showcasing the work of late La Conner artist Jesus Guillen. The e...

  • Gluten-Free Apple Cranberry Dessert

    Patricia Aqiimuk Paul|Sep 15, 2021

It may be work, but the rewarding part of this recipe is you can use small apples or apples you have cut the worm holes out. You can use apples that may otherwise go to waste. I cut open a box of apples planning to make applesauce and ended up with enough apples for this recipe. There’s barely any flour in this recipe, and I decided to use gluten free, so I could share with family. We enjoyed ours with vanilla ice cream. Ingredients Apples, 4 cups, peeled, cored and chopped Egg, 1 Dried c...
