  • Caring about cats

    Sep 18, 2019

To whom it might concern: I must respond to yet another letter to the editor concerning the population growth of feral cats in La Conner. These wonderful girls are not targeting pets at large, but a specific “family” in my own back yard, a momma and her five three-month old kittens and [they will soon be] old enough to reproduce, as well as [her becoming a] momma, again. I support and applaud their efforts and goals to educate the population on a very real problem in our community. Please remember, your indoor and outdoor cats prey on our wil...

  • Polite Trump criticism

    Sep 18, 2019

I want to congratulate our wonderful friend Clara Duff for the magnificent letter in last week’s paper. Everything she had to say was right on and said with such grace. I am not that gracious and not a Democrat but rather a Webster Liberal. For those under 35 years of age, google “Webster.” Trump has been a disaster for the environment and for the economy. Also in every other area that I can think of; but that’s another topic for another day. Climate is always changing but as population has increased and the use of fossil fuels skyrock...

  • Libraries light our way

    Ken Stern|Sep 18, 2019

Sunday starts one of the most important weeks of the year: Banned Books Week, celebrated the fourth week of September annually since 1982. Each of us can impersonate a newspaper editor – or be our normal citizen selves – and celebrate our First Amendment rights of freedom of speech and the press. That fits this year’s theme: “Censorship Leaves Us in the Dark.” We are all urged to “Keep the Light On” during this year’s Banned Books Week. Every parent has the right at home or in private gatherings to keep books from their kids. Anyon...

  • Insightful view of Trump

    Sep 18, 2019

Well said Clara! Your comments [“Citizen’s view,” Sept. 11] explain precisely what liberals are experiencing under the Trump administration. Thank you for your insightful response to her letter. Tanis Roelofs...

  • 2020 Russian election attacks will be intense

    Ken Stern|Sep 18, 2019

Washington Secretary of State Kim Wyman (R) was emphatic Monday night in Mount Vernon: “Make no mistake. In 2016 Russia had the best coordinated attack on our elections. They were not the only state, but they were the best,” she told the 50 people gathered at the Skagit Public Utilities District building. The most frightening part of Russia’s efforts to influence U.S. elections, the Thurston County Republican said, was the “hundreds of thousands of fake email address that get into social...

  • Welcome back: Totem pole raised during elementary school ceremony

    Bill Reynolds|Sep 18, 2019

At La Conner Elementary, it isn’t just back to school time for students and staff. The iconic campus totem pole has also returned. A large crowd gathered around the school’s parking circle last Wednesday to witness re-installation of its near quarter-century old signature landmark, which was refurbished over the summer by master carver and Swinomish Indian Tribal Community Senator Kevin Paul. The project was especially meaningful for Paul, who had joined his late father and brother, Alex Pau...

  • Orchids grown on a grand scale

    Mark Stephens|Sep 18, 2019

David and Jane Edgley live in greater La Conner. They moved here five years ago from Whidbey Island. David is an enterprise architect with a large computer company. His hobby and passion is growing orchids. He has over 200 orchids in a climate-controlled greenhouse he built on the flat roof of his garage. He built his first, small greenhouse at their home in Seattle, and when they moved to Whidbey Island he built a new greenhouse for his orchids. When they moved to La Conner, he made several...

  • Democrats picnic, proselytize at Pioneer Park

    Ken Stern|Sep 18, 2019

Legislative District 10 Democrats from Island, Snohomish and Skagit counties came to La Conner’s Pioneer Park Saturday, holding a salmon lunch fundraiser to buy metaphorical political bricks to elect Democrats, strengthening a blue wall they have been building since 2017. State Democratic Party Chair Tina Podlodowski told the 75 party activists she had a two word job description: “Elect Democrats.” The 14 elected officials and candidates for office speaking to the crowd highlighted their accom...

  • CHARLES ROBERT HEDLUND

    Sep 18, 2019

Charles Robert Hedlund passed on September 10, 2019 at the age of 81. “Chuck” to his friends, which was just about everyone, was a lifelong Skagit Valley and La Conner resident. Born on June 20, 1938 in Mt. Vernon, WA he attended Lincoln and Roosevelt grade schools until moving to La Conner in third grade. He graduated from La Conner High School in 1956 and married his high school sweetheart Marianne Swanson (La Conner class of 1957) in 1958.
