The La Conner Town Council covered a lot of ground verbally at its Oct. 12 meeting but no items on their agenda required a vote. Thirty-four of the 74 page council packet laid out the 2022 town budget, which Mayor Ramon Hayes had sent council the day before. Hayes told council, “You have a small pool of people, under 1,000, living in a boutique community.” He emphasized their needs must be managed with limited funding, Staff wage increases were one of a few line items emphasized, with Finance Director Maria DeGoede explaining it is pegged to th...
Linda Clark presented an incomplete narrative of her advocating for and intervening “on behalf of two dogs in town” in 2014 in her guest column “Why I challenged the sale of Hedlin Field” in the Oct. 13 Weekly News. Skagit County Superior Court, Skagit County Sheriff’s Office and Washington state appeals court documents offer a detailed, official record showing that in January 2015 she was arrested, went to trial that October and was convicted on two counts, burglary in the second degree, a class B felony, and taking/injuring/killing pets, a g...
Finally! Construction is set for five homes along the northern edge of Channel Cove, the Home Trust of Skagit development on Park Street near Caledonia Street and Maple Avenue in La Conner. Executive Director Jodi Monroe says construction will start in January. That is a disappointing two year delay, a result of a long regulatory environmental review before the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, assembling funding and then construction related labor, material and cost complications. Monroe has been optimistic all along. “It’s a lift of lov...
We talk about community and call fellow county residents Skagitonians, a unique name marking our territory, the place we call home. We think of ourselves as neighbors finding common cause in this place where we all live, even though from Anacortes to Marblemount our physical and social landscapes and experiences are quite diverse and even unique. We, all Skagitonians, ought to be in pain over the suffering and death the coronavirus pandemic has brought to our neighbors. October began with grim milestones, with first the count of 100 people...
I remember sitting at my desk in fourth grade. It was a sunny day and out the window I could see some hills of Palouse farmland. Our teacher was covering the westward expansion of Europeans. I found myself wondering what happened to the Indigenous people and asked about it. “They moved away,” she said, “They live over toward Yakima.” I remember feeling a pain in my stomach. It didn’t feel right. She moved on to another topic and then it was recess. It wasn’t until much later that I learned the truth. For millennia our Indigenous siblings ma...
The Biden administration will reopen border entry in November to international travelers who are fully vaccinated, the Associated Press reported Oct. 12. The specific date was not stated. On Oct. 13 Gov. Jay Inslee released a statement saying, “The local economies of border communities in Washington and other states are connected to our friends across the border, and their recovery from the pandemic has been delayed by the border closure. I am proud of the work my office, the Department of Commerce, our congressional delegation, and other s...
Building a new recreation and leisure activity model here continues to be a work in progress. Town officials are stressing the progress part. A first draft of an updated Parks Element to be included in La Conner’s Comprehensive Plan has been completed and made ready for Planning Commission review. Planner Michael Davolio said he and Parks Commission Chairman Ollie Iversen had reviewed edits made by former planner Marianne Manville-Ailles to the Parks Element proposal and together had made further changes for inclusion in the present draft. “The...
Ellie Marble is a big hit with La Conner High volleyball fans. The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association is a huge fan, too. The WIAA selected Marble for Athlete of the Week honors based on her stellar play at the recent Capital City Invitational Tournament in Olympia. Marble helped La Conner place third among 17 tourney teams from all enrollment classifications. She compiled 119 digs and 109 kills, served at a 98 per cent clip and was 77 of 77 on serve receives. “Marble has been a...
The La Conner High School volleyball team swept three matches last week, two of them in conference play. The team, the two-time defending state 2B champion, followed up on its superb performance at a major non-league tournament in Olympia. It placed third among 17 larger school entries at the Capital City Invitational Tournament earlier this month. The Lady Braves, undefeated in 12 regular season contests, returned from Olympia to defeat 1A Lynden Christian and league foe Concrete at home and NW2B rival Friday Harbor on the road. The...
Neither La Conner nor Coupeville had enough healthy players to field teams the week before meeting at Whittaker Field on Friday. Unfortunately for the Braves, the visitors were able to heal fast and lay a big hurt on a young and rebuilding team that suffered its fourth consecutive shutout loss, falling 46-0 on Homecoming Night. “We played a better second half,” said head coach Charlie Edwards, lamenting that his club gave up six touchdowns before intermission. “We just have to remember our a...
Mandatory mask-wearing has been a bone of contention for some, going back 18 months since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. But it won’t be an issue in La Conner the afternoon of Oct. 29. That’s when mask-wearing in observance of Halloween is always a fashion must. And never more so than during this year’s downtown parade, set for the Friday before Halloween. “The parade participants will gather in the south Port parking lot, and everyone must be masked,” Town Administrator Scott Thomas told the Weekly News. Halloween and mask-wear...
The Ann Washington Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution had a surprise keynote speaker highlighting their 100th anniversary celebration Saturday: Adda Gaches, founding Chapter Regent. Of course, it was a reenactment, since there were no video, much less internet, connections in 1921 when the only chapter in Skagit County formed in Mount Vernon. The January installation was at “the home of Mrs. Roger Hannaford, overlooking the famous La Conner Flats,” the chapter historian rec...
After a wave of good-sized public events actually took place in July and August, many venues and civic groups are once again scrubbing face-to-face events from their calendars. The Skagit County Fairgrounds was able to hold its annual fair and house the Bike MS Deception Pass Classic, but cancelled its Fall Garage Sale. Skagit Fire District 2 decided not to hold its annual spaghetti feed on the first Saturday in October. “It’s amazing how many people we can pack into our fire hall for the spaghetti feed,” said firefighter Jason Vande...
COVID-19 milestones, including grave markers, were passed in Skagit County in the last three weeks. September ended with 100 people in Skagit County hospitals from the coronavirus that month. Skagit Public Health reported that Oct. 9 the “county surpassed a cumulative total of 10,000 COVID-19 cases since the beginning of the pandemic. The day prior- Oct. 8- Skagit County reported its 100th death due to the virus,” its press release stated. Last week, Oct. 11-15, five more residents died, raising the death toll to 105. One percent of inf...
Cod is on our table several times a year. I order wild Alaskan cod through our Butcher Box subscription. There are six pieces per package. Each serving size is individually sealed and I take out two for a meal. We also keep a wide variety of fresh organic fruits for snacks and cooking, selecting each fruit for freshness, ideally. That’s not possible in this time of COVID-19. I order lemons to keep on hand. My daughter and I will often share a bag of lemons. When baking cod, squeeze fresh l...
