A rumor started circulating last week on Facebook that a large male cougar had attacked and killed a horse on La Conner Whitney road. The rumor suggested the cougar also returned the following night. In trying to track down the facts of this rumor, calls were made to various sources close to the situation, including the assumed owners of the horse. As of press time, no calls had been returned. Sheriff Sutton was at the Pioneer Market on Monday afternoon. When asked about the “cougar” attack he responded that a horse was attacked, but he did...
Continued public access to privately owned beach sections north of town appeared to hinge on local mediation efforts. That was the hope a month ago. More recently, though, a fence with two cable locks on the gate has been placed across a pathway used by hikers and dog owners to reach the popular shoreline area, perhaps closing the door both literally and figuratively to resolution of the festering dispute. Dog Beach-goers were alarmed to find the fence put up Oct 14, aware that former Town Public Works Director Gordy Bell had been approached...
Fire District 13 commissioners unanimously approved selling its half-interest in the Chilberg Road fire station to the Town of La Conner for $555.750 at their Oct. 20 meeting. The Fire District and Town each had the property appraised. The average of the appraisals is $1.1 million. The two bodies are following their 2014 agreement giving the town the right to buy out Fire District 13’s portion of the fire station. Mayor Ramon Hayes had reported to the Town Council at its Oct. 10 meeting of the appraisals and recommended the price. The appraisal...

If only the candidates vote in this year’s town council election, they will win. Running unopposed are incumbents John Leaver, Council Position 2, Bill Stokes, Council Position 3 and Mary Lee Chamberlain, Council Position 4. Once the La Conner School District directors vote, they, too, win. Running without opposition are Brad Smith, Director District 3, Lynette Cram, Director District 4 and John Thulen, Director District 5. The same is true for Fire District 12 and 13 commissioner positions. Doug Peterson is running unopposed for C...
Last week I finally got my Washington driver’s license and license plates. Then I went to the Mount Vernon library to work. Here is a slice of my life: The clerk at the Department of Licensing asked if I wanted to register to vote. Bless her. Yes, I did, and did. No forms or anything. It was part of the state, automatic. Sometimes citizenship needs to be that easy. The Department of Licensing is an agency of state government. Great. In Ohio, licensing bureaus are contract companies the state hires. The owners get a piece of every t...
This year’s elections are underway. Registered voters have till 8 p.m., November 7 to vote. New Washingtonians can register through October 30. While voting is at the heart of the democratic process, heavy lifting precedes it. Our local ballot is surprisingly long. My policy is to only vote for candidates who have earned my vote. My obligation is to find out where each candidate stands. If I don’t know the pertinent positions and the office’s demands, I am a sloppy citizen if I cast a vote anyway. Yet I am irresponsible if I don’t vote. O...
