  • Braves weather Bellingham storm for comeback win

    Bill Reynolds|Oct 29, 2014

On a cold, gusty Saturday night in Bellingham, La Conner High head football coach Johnny Lee was blown away by his team’s ability to storm back from an early deficit. The Braves churned out nearly 250 yards on the ground and checked in with one of their best performances to date despite the blustery conditions, scoring three second half touchdowns to edge Bellingham 21-14 in non-league grid action at Civic Field. “It was a great win for us,” said Lee, whose club improved to 6-2 overall. “I re...

  • Boys soccer:Braves edge Orcas in extra session

    Bill Reynolds|Oct 29, 2014

Game officials struggled with calls during much of La Conner High’s home soccer match against Orcas last week. Braves head coach Steve Deleon had less trouble making right calls, however. Two, in particular, were on target. The first was starting Matt Semrau in goal. Semrau let nothing past him, forcing a best-of-five shootout round after regulation play and two overtime periods ended in a scoreless deadlock. The second of Deleon’s spot-on calls was shifting senior Erick Reinstra to the net for...

    Karla Reynolds|Oct 29, 2014

The tragic shots rang out at Marysville-Pilchuck High School last Friday, but the emotional impact was felt on La Conner campuses as well. The latest in a string of horrific school shootings dating to Columbine 15 years ago has hit close to home. Closer, even, than the 30-minute drive separating La Conner and Marysville. “We have several students who are related to the shooter and also to the victims,” explained a somber La Conner School District Superintendent Dr. Tim Bruce, who addressed board members and staff at their monthly meeting Mon...

  • Tribe and agencies wrestle with taxing issues

    Sandy Stokes|Oct 29, 2014

The Swinomish Tribal Senate has pretty much put the kibosh on the possibility of tax refunds for the 931 La Conner area homeowners whose property is coming off the county tax rolls next year. What hasn’t been finalized is the level of funding the public entities who rely on those tax revenues will receive in the future and how much of the tax burden could be shifted to the remaining property owners. Under state law, people can request tax refunds for up to three years. There were five people whose buildings are on leased tribal land in S...
