  • Low-Fat Bean Soup

    Patricia Aqiimuk Paul|Nov 2, 2022

Windy fall weather brings on the desire for warm homemade soups. My health dictates a low-fat diet and my husband, Kevin, assisted in preparing the ingredients with some guidance from me. Over a month ago, I purchased a 25-pound bag of dried pinto beans from Costco. Rather than opening it, Kevin drove to town and purchased a 16-bean soup mix. The photo is my taste test size serving. Less than ¼ cup with a dollop of low-fat sour cream. This recipe is also prepared not to be spicy. Yet...

  • 38th annual Art's Alive!: Great art, Friday gala

    Anne Basye|Nov 2, 2022

This year, raising a glass to the artists featured in the annual Art's Alive! festival will be a cinch. Instead of sipping your wine or beer outdoors in a tent – a measure taken in 2021 to keep the unseen but ever-present COVID-19 virus from crashing the party – you can offer your toast face to face with the artists during the Friday night opening gala Nov. 11. Add in some scrumptious appetizers and the 38th Art's Alive! weekend will start with "a more traditional gathering of townspeople to...

Gov. Jay Inslee’s COVID-19 emergency declaration expired Monday. A statement from his office notes that while the virus persists, vaccines and medical treatments are broadly available and offer strong protection. The state's decisive pandemic response saved lives, the news release states, and points out that if the entire country achieved Washington’s low COVID-19 death rate, 433,000 lives might have been saved. Washington ranked 45th in the United States at 191 deaths per 100,000 population. Mississippi had the highest death rate from COV...
