  • Agen, Baker maintain large school board vote leads

    Ken Stern|Nov 13, 2019

This corrects and updates the Nov. 6 election story which incorrectly stated all votes had been counted in the La Conner school board elections. Newcomer Marlys Baker will defeat Board Chair Janie Beasley for La Conner School Board Director and John Agen is posed to take Kate Szurek’s Director seat. Tuesday’s ballot count update shows a turnout over 50% higher than the 2015 school board election. With 800 votes to be counted countywide, Baker has 67% of the vote, steadily increasing her lead sin...

  • Art's Alive! legacy show sets records

    Ken Stern|Nov 13, 2019

The 35th Anniversary of Art’s Alive! in La Conner opened with a bang and a crush of people attending the opening reception Friday in Maple Hall and the weekend, extending through 4 p.m. Monday, kept drawing people in. The show’s title, “Celebrating Skagit Valley Art Legacy,” was apt. Some 10 of the 12 artists had shown previous years. The late Clayton James and the elderly Ed Kamuda were the headliners and show draws. And they sold “really well” said Sylvia Strong, co-chair of the La Conner A...

  • I- 976 passed; will it become law?

    Ken Stern|Nov 13, 2019

Voters across Washington passed I-976 by over 100,000 votes. The measure limits motor vehicle license fees to $30. In Skagit County, the measure is passing with 53.5% of the vote, with 800 ballots to be counted after Tuesday. The measure may never become law, however. If it does, Skagit County road maintenance will not be affected. “There will not be a direct impact on us. We are not reliant on license tab dollars to maintain county roads,” said Public Works Director Dan Berentson Friday. There may not be grants for large state projects in the...

    Nov 13, 2019

The people of La Conner have spoken! By an overwhelming margin, the citizens of La Conner voted to fundamentally change our school board. The message voters sent is clear: changing the leadership of our district is absolutely necessary for us to move forward in the best interest of the students, families, teachers and support staff of La Conner Schools! The La Conner community has been speaking out for months, attending school board meetings in record numbers, calling and writing board members, participating in grassroots organizing efforts,...

  • Voters: please point out the route to the future

    Ken Stern|Nov 13, 2019

OK. The voters have spoken. By a comfortable margin citizens supported I-976, reducing car tab fees to $30 and not allowing local jurisdictions to tax themselves for transit this way. The majority of people in the state are saying no to taxes and no to heavy handed Olympia legislators. Yes, the formulas and pots of money that must be created for generating funds for preparing Washington’s ever increasing and complicated transportation infrastructure through the 21t century are as convoluted as Seattle’s roadways at rush hour. Do you know tha...

  • Billiken Club of La Conner is 110 years old

    Nov 13, 2019

The Billiken Club of La Conner was established in November 1909 by the women of La Conner. They adopted as their mascot the Billiken good luck charm which was used extensively in the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition held in Seattle in the same year. The Billiken is “the God of things as they ought to be.” Since the women organized to promote charitable causes in the community of La Conner, it was an appropriate mascot and mission statement for their new club. Dues were set at one dollar a year. Membership was limited to fifteen. New mem...

  • La Conner High girls go for repeat state net crown

    Bill Reynolds|Nov 13, 2019

The Sun Dome in Yakima has a lot of fond memories for the La Conner High volleyball program. But the defending state champions aren’t looking back this week. Instead, their focus is on the task ahead, starting with a first round State 2B Tournament date with Willapa Valley (13-3) Thursday at 1:30 p.m. “We’re looking forward to going into the State Tournament, coming off a good showing at Tri-District,” La Conner head coach Suzanne Marble told the Weekly News on Monday. “I’ve scouted six of the...

  • 'Pray the Gay Away' a must see

    Ken Stern|Nov 13, 2019

Wow: A world premiere musical, “Pray the Gay Away,” opened at the Lincoln Theatre last week and runs through Nov. 24. For that reason, go. Minnesotans must go, you betcha! The play, set in suburban Minneapolis in 1982, offers a time capsule of church-based anti-gay prejudice at a time when almost all churches were anti-gay. It also is sadly current, even with the gains forced upon mainstream society by gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transgendered and queer individuals and organizations. By definition world premieres are ambitious. This one is aud...
