  • Sleeping Santa

    Ric Henderson|Dec 24, 2014

While taking the Christmas decorations down from the shelf, my thoughts race with memories of times past and times present — of those individuals who shaped my life, and those who now are my life. From the first box, I remove a carefully wrapped plaster Santa. He is slumped into a comfortable chair, asleep, apparently from total exhaustion. I set the Santa down and contemplate his condition and recalled the story my Grandmother Klinksiek told of her shopping day in the early 1940s. She...

    Alexander Kramer|Dec 24, 2014

A recent ruling by the U.S. Department of Justice opening the door for marijuana production on native tribal reservations in states where it’s legal is something the Swinomish Indian Senate will talk about next year. The memo from the Justice Department released December 11 allows native tribes to pursue the process of growing and selling marijuana but reserves the right for federal enforcement if regulations are broken. “At the beginning of the year, there will be a discussion,” said Swinomish Tribal Chairman Brian Cladoosby. “It is on the...

  • Lady Braves to host Australian team

    Bill Reynolds|Dec 24, 2014

The La Conner High girls’ basketball team is used to being atop league standings. Pretty soon the Lady Braves will also get a glimpse of what life’s like Down Under. That’s because undefeated La Conner is scheduled to face an Australian select team Jan. 6 at Landy James Gym. The Lady Braves will tip off against the Mornington Breakers, who have been touring the Pacific Northwest, in an “international friendly” starting at 6 p.m. “This is something we’re really looking forward to,” La Conner head coach Scott Novak said Sunday, “because it’s the...

  • Lady Braves improve on perfect mark

    Bill Reynolds|Dec 24, 2014

Their record is perfect, but the La Conner High Lady Braves still look for ways to get better. “We’re always wanting to improve, to grow as a team,” veteran La Conner head coach Scott Novak said after his charges routed Auburn Adventist 60-23 last week. The focus that night was rebounding. Senior front-liner Anna Cook led all scorers with 16 points, yet surpassed that total on the glass. Cook grabbed a game-high 18 rebounds — most of those coming at the offensive end — to pace La Con...

  • Braves scale Mount Baker in bounce back game

    Bill Reynolds|Dec 24, 2014

The La Conner Braves didn’t stay down long after a tough 68-60 loss at Auburn Adventist last week. They rebounded by topping Mount Baker in a big non-league weekend test at home. And it was big on several levels. Not only did the Braves need to rebound from the Auburn setback, but La Conner knew going in it faced a tall order posed by Mount Baker’s front court tandem of Timothy Soares and T.J. Bass. The 6’8” Soares was coming off a 19-point, 18-rebound effort in Mount Baker’s 63-57 overtime...

  • RIP Bibli

    Dec 24, 2014

Bibli, the La Conner Library hamster, died early Monday morning, December 22, due to old age. Bibli was a free hamster who came to live at the library during the summer of 2013 in support of the Summer Reading Program theme, Dig Into Reading. He never left. Though his friends were unsure of his exact age, he was considered an adult by people in the know. Well cared for hamsters tend to live two to three years at most. A Roborovski hamster, the smallest kind of hamster breed, Bibli spent the...
