Washington is a big and varied state, in every possible way, from sea level and Seattle to Mt. Rainer’s summit and Palouse grain fields. Writers have been explaining our region in words since explorers first arrived. Fifty of Washington’s best writers from the 1870s through the 1960s are summarized for your exploration in Peter Donahue’s “Salmon Eaters to Sagebrushers: Washington’s Lost Literary Legacy,” newly published by Washington State University Press. MAKING HISTORY BY THE BOOK – The spirit of the old days live on at Lavone Newell-Reim and Dick Reim’s Skagit City Studio and Gardens. Hundreds came out, many bringing elaborate potluck dishes or bottles of wine. Many left with a copy, or copies, of Lavone’s (left) and photographer Cathy Stevens’ (right) new book, “The Barn Shows.” From 1986 to 2003 the annual art exhibit featuring the Skagit Valley’s best fine artists took place there. – Photo by Ken Stern
