Skagit County waiting for Phase 2 reopening approval

La Conner businesses have started to reopen this week, before the Washington Department of Health has approved Skagit County’s application to move into Phase 2 of Gov. Jay Inslee’s Stay Safe COVID-19 order for phased re-opening of Washington’s economy.

Town signs option for Hedlin's ballfield

Hedlin’s ballfield on Maple Avenue has played host to many triumphs for La Conner youth sports teams over the decades. While the COVID-19 pandemic has sidelined practices and games there this spring, the nearly two-acre site is still scene of what some are calling a win-win situation.

Lightning knocked lights out Saturday
Over 4,200 greater La Conner Puget Sound Energy customers were without power for two hours Saturday night. Lights went out at 8:39 p.m. They came back on at 10:57 p.m. The strike was in the Peth’s Corner area, La Conner Whitney, McLean and Downey Roads, and affected 4,249 customers, said Andrew Padula, PSE spokesperson. There was no real damage to equipment but until an inspection was made power could not be turned on.

La Conner High seniors have definite plans in uncertain times
The coronavirus pandemic has created a climate of uncertainty, but La Conner High seniors still have firm plans about what they will do beyond the summer. As in years past, the school’s next crop of graduates will pursue dreams taking them to diverse and in some cases distant destinations.

Janie Beasley given 'Enduring Sprit Award'
Through the years Janie Beasley has been lauded locally for having shown an enduring spirit while working on the Swinomish Reservation, in Skagit County and at La Conner Schools. Now that enduring spirit is being recognized by the Seattle-based Native Action Network.

Skagit County petitions for early Phase 2 reopening
Friday afternoon the Skagit County Board of Health asked Gov. Jay Inslee and Washington Department of Health Secretary John Wiesman for a variance from the state’s Start Safe Plan criteria to allow Skagit County to move forward to Phase 2 “today, and by June 1 at the latest.”
