    Inspired by celebrating Tom Robbins

    The Birds|Sep 13, 2023

To Tom Robbins: your Kingly glow persists. Seasonally inspired, birds deposited seeds where no one could not see their timely forthcoming. First ever to proclaim your first King of the Day parade. Open kitchen blind, eyes getting bigger each day. Disbelief morphing to winged wonder. Dutifully aimed berry-washing-breakfast water to where thicker and thicker stems flaunted all green larger, five-pronged huge leaves. How big could they get? Then came their royal salute to you, King Tom: A string...

  • Library Happenings

    Jean Markert|Jul 26, 2023

Summer is quickly coming to a close, but we still have lots of exciting things happening at the library. We have several weeks of summer reading to keep everyone busy. Keep buzzing through those books so you can turn in your completed packet for a prize. Thank you to drummer Ray Soriano for a great drumming workshop. Those who attended had a wonderful time. Thank you also to La Conner firefighter Natalie, who took time to let us explore and learn about a fire truck. Everyone who came got a chance to sit in the truck and explore all the cool...

  • Marina Moorings

    Chris Omdal|Jul 26, 2023

We count “boat nights” as a measure of how busy the marina is over any given time period. Each boat that spends a single night on one of our guest docks counts, so a boat that is here for a week will count as a stay of seven boat nights. Over the past week, we have hosted 124 boat nights, or just over 30 boats per night on F and G docks. That is a lot of visitors coming to our town and for more than just a few hours. The boats that come in for lunch and shopping and then depart for home are coun...

  • Youth soccer season kicking off with online registration

    Jul 19, 2023

La Conner is known for having goal-oriented kids. And many of them can be seen soon on local soccer fields. Registration is now open for children to participate, with the La Conner Youth Soccer Association planning to field teams in several age categories. Micros, comprised of kindergarten through first graders, will play three-on-three matches on Friday evenings. Teams in U-8 through U-13 divisions will practice during the week and play their matches on Saturdays. “All are welcome to play, and scholarships are available,” says LCYSA reg...

  • Aqiimuk's Kitchen: Cucumber radish salad

    Patricia Aqiimuk Paul|Jul 12, 2023

Cucumber Radish Salad. After slicing the cucumbers, lightly salt them. No need to drain off the salted cucumber juice. You want it to mingle with the fresh squeezed lemon juice. The result is refreshing. The cucumber and radish slices are crisp. I used baby radishes from my garden. But larger radishes will do. Persian cucumbers have a thin skin; it's not bitter. Other slicing cucumbers may be substituted but you might peel them first. Now a special thanks to my readers. To Connie who said my...

  • Cora Thomas|Jul 5, 2023

The Skagit River Poetry Foundation held its third annual auction June 24 at Hillcrest Park Lodge in Mount Vernon. One hundred and twenty five supporters gathered to raise funds for their mission of cultivating literacy and changing lives through the power of poetry. It was indeed midsummer. The theme was Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” The whole place sparkled and shimmered with fairy dust as the decor, those who wore costumes and auction items imbued the evening. As guests arrived, they were greeted by volunteers, then had many ch...

  • Skagit Pioneer of Year Family member Duane Berentson a key public official

    Bill Reynolds|Jul 5, 2023

In his many roles as an educator, lawmaker, state official and in private business, the late Duane Berentson was hailed as a team player. And family man. The well-documented devotion to service and consensus building that defined him has been a blueprint for others in the Benson/Berentson lineage. The family will be honored at the 119th annual Pioneer Picnic in La Conner Aug. 3 as the Skagit County Pioneer Association Family of the Year. For three decades a key figure in Olympia, Duane...

  • Marina Moorings: Port of Skagit

    Chris Omdal|Jul 5, 2023

What a week! We have been so busy for the past few weeks I did not think we could be busier, but the 4th has set a new high water mark. We had to turn away dozens of reservation requests for G dock and the RV park because every foot of the dock is spoken for. We even stashed a couple of smaller boats on the flat just to ease congestion and fit everyone in – literally as busy as it can be. This weekend and through the holiday we are averaging about 30 boats per night on the guest docks and 40 RVs...

  • Sunny weather and events aplenty here last weekend

    Bill Reynolds|Jun 28, 2023

Halloween was in the air on summer solstice weekend, which goes to show all things are possible in La Conner. It was a truly spellbinding weekend here – perhaps best embodied by upbeat witches' dance flash mob performances at Maple Center's Spirit Wheel Courtyard – with ideal weather greeting those taking part in an array of events on both sides of the channel. La Conner cast its spell on locals and visitors alike with an eclectic brew of attractions. There were traditional go-to activities lik...

  • Bird births, lives, longevity and mortality

    Bob Hamblin|Jun 28, 2023

The wandering albatross has the longest wingspan of all living birds at over nine feet. This species may live to be 40 years old and start breeding at eight years old. They only lay one egg every two years and it can take up to two years to raise a chick. The nest is built in a wind-swept area to help the adult get airborne. Ninety mph winds are not uncommon, and these winds may blow the chick out of the raised nest, in which case the adult does not recognize it and will not feed it. Unless they are in the nests, chicks will starve to death....

  • Marina Moorings

    Chris Omdal, Harbormaster|Jun 28, 2023

The guest docks have been slammed this week. We have been docking boats and fielding reservations left and right. And yet, even as the summer rush is upon us we generally still have space available during the week. Boaters who are not tied to the weekend have their choice of moorings. We have had a lot of people asking about crab season opening, with audible disappointment when we tell them we are not the ones who set the season. Talking with these people has made me realize once again what a...

Saturday's second annual Anacortes pride parade was a rainbow-plus of colors, June 16. Thousands of cheering, clapping, dancing, rainbow flag waving supporters shouted their approval from the sidewalks and curbs along the downtown Commercial Street parade route. Hundreds of happy, proud paraders ranging in age from babes in arms and strollers, to children pulling stuffed animal filled wagons to church contingents to Democrats, PFLAG representatives, motorcycle mamas, queens in drag and more, mar...

The town is site once more of Independence Day festivities with something for everyone – from a holiday parade to food and beverages to live music to a fireworks display over Swinomish Channel. The fun starts with the always popular 12 p.m. parade down First Street. Parade staging is set for 11 a.m. on State Street, in front of the Port of Skagit’s La Conner Marina south basin parking area. • Adopt-A-Hydrant fundraiser a splashing success

    Bill Reynolds|Jun 21, 2023

There's one excuse that will not fly for anyone parking in front of about two dozen fire hydrants on Swinomish Reservation. That being they weren't visible. Instead, you can hardly miss those hydrants anymore. By Saturday afternoon 22 fire hydrants had been adopted and most repainted – many with distinctive bright colors and designs – as part of a Skagit County Fire District 13 fundraiser. The district's Adopt-A-Hydrant campaign was coordinated by firefighter Logan James. Participants paid $10...

  • Italian arum: Beautiful, poisonous and invasive

    Valerie Rose|Jun 21, 2023

Italian arum is a deceptively attractive invasive imposter. I fell for her ruse. The bright orange berries brought color to an otherwise nondescript area of the yard, so I let it grow. Now I wish it had never found my address as it has found its way into most of my garden beds, even in the lawn. Because it is so invasive and poisonous to humans and animals, the Washington State Department of Agriculture classifies it as a Class C noxious weed. Class C noxious weeds are described as “already widespread in Washington. In some cases, counties m...
