  • Softball player hits a line drive

Braves handily tame Lions on the diamonds

    Bill Reynolds|May 1, 2024

It was cold, damp and gusty in La Conner last Saturday, a perfect day for the La Conner Braves softball and baseball teams. The Lady Braves were especially thankful their home doubleheader with Concrete wasn't rained out as head coach Loran James' charges broke into the win column with convincing 22-13 and 21-13 triumphs. It was a case of déjà vu. A year ago, La Conner had also swept a pair of softball slugfests with their Skagit County rivals, winning those battles by 35-27 and 32-27 m...

  • Fresh off track trials, Braves prepare for league title meet

    Bill Reynolds|May 1, 2024

The La Conner High School track teams should feel at home today at Mount Vernon High School’s Bulldog Stadium for the NW2B/1B Championship Meet. That’s because La Conner enjoyed strong showings on the Mount Vernon oval last week during the 116th Skagit County Track and Field Championships. With reigning state 2B hurdles champion Tommy Murdock leading the way, sweeping his signature events, the La Conner boys placed fifth on their side of the county meet which was paced by 2A Anacortes. The Anacortes girls topped the team leaderboard whil...

    Bill Reynolds|May 1, 2024

La Conner thus improved to 5-5 overall and 2-4 in league action going into a scheduled April 23 home game with conference foe Mount Vernon Christian. La Conner plays at Orcas...

  • Middle school girls win JV track meet

    Bill Reynolds|Apr 24, 2024

Other teams brought larger rosters, but the host La Conner Middle School girls’ junior varsity track team had Faith. Jenkins, a seventh grader, swept the girls’ short sprints. She clocked 13.39 in the 100 meters and hit the 200-meter tape in 29.08. She captured the high jump with a leap of 4’-0”. • La Conner golf team sweeps two matches

    Bill Reynolds|Apr 24, 2024

Home or away, it didn’t matter where La Conner golfers played to win last week. The Braves were equally strong at their Swinomish Links home course on April 16 and at the Battle Creek Golf Club on Tulalip Reservation on April 18. La Conner edged visiting Lummi 137-148 with Corran Eisen taking top medalist honors by carding a low score of 43 over nine holes. The team scoring was based on the top three nine-hole scores recorded by each team, La Conner assistant coach Galen McKnight told the Weekly News on Friday. La Conner enjoyed an even w...

Braves outperform big schools in Skagit Showdown

    Bill Reynolds|Apr 17, 2024

First Street isn't the only place in town with parking issues. The Whittaker Field parking lot on N. Sixth Street was jammed with vehicles April 10 when La Conner hosted the annual Skagit Showdown Track & Field Meet, drawing teams and fans from 2A Burlington-Edison and Sedro-Woolley and 1B Mount Vernon Christian. Some visitors thought their only parking option was inside an open gate leading to the school bus garage. One driver even parked in front of the gate, briefly causing heartburn for La...

Just three days after hosting the much-anticipated Skagit Showdown, La Conner thinclads competed at the 24-team Cashmere Invitational April 13, where senior Tommy Murdock swept the boys' hurdles events and eighth grader Kiana Jenkins placed second in the girls' 200-meter dash. Murdock captured the 110s in 15.00 and 300s in 40.23 to pace the Braves, who finished eighth on the leaderboard. The...

  • Braves' ball teams have a bumpy road trip

    Bill Reynolds|Apr 17, 2024

Travel wasn’t kind to the La Conner High School baseball and softball teams last week. The Braves suffered a pair of heartbreaking one-run extra-inning losses while the young Lady Braves were dealt double-digit setbacks during visits to Coupeville and Friday Harbor. The Braves were edged 9-8 at Coupeville last Thursday and 5-4 at Friday Harbor Saturday. Each NW2B/1B league contest was decided in the bottom of the eighth inning as when La Conner dropped a 13-12 verdict at 1A Sultan on April 2. “It’s hard to believe we’ve lost three straigh...

  • Braves' late comeback falls short in Sultan

    Bill Reynolds|Apr 10, 2024

The shorthanded La Conner Braves baseball team had a long afternoon in Sultan April 2. The 2B Braves, minus key starters for a non-league spring break road game, trailed early but rallied late to force extra innings before falling 13-12 to the 1A hosts. La Conner (3-3 overall) erupted for nine runs in the top of the seventh inning to tie the score at 11-11. Braves reliever Kenai Zimmerman then set Sultan down in order in the home half of the seventh, pushing the contest to an eighth frame. In the top of the eighth, La Conner took a brief 12-11...

Murdock claimed one of his signature events – the 110-meter hurdles – and placed first in the 100- and 400-meter sprints to help lead La Conner to a third-place finish on the boys’ side of the March 28 trials. MVC edged C...

  • Orcas teams flee La Conner with close wins on the diamonds

    Bill Reynolds|Apr 3, 2024

If it wasn’t for bad luck, the La Conner High School’s softball team wouldn’t have any luck at all. For the second time in four outings, head coach Loran James’ young club came up on the short end of a one-run contest. The Lady Braves (0-4 overall; 0-2 in league) lost 7-6 March 29 to visiting NW2B/1B rival Orcas Island. La Conner had earlier dropped a 15-14 non-conference slugfest at Muckleshoot. After escaping town with its narrow triumph, Orcas (2-8 overall; 2-2 in league) pounded league foe Concrete 29-11. La Conner travels to Concret...

  • Track makes strides at Coupeville meet

    Bill Reynolds|Mar 27, 2024

The Lady Braves placed a close second and the boys were third on their respective team leaderboards. Braves rally, nip Loggers in extra innings

    Bill Reynolds|Mar 27, 2024

Being better armed proved the difference for La Conner as the Braves edged Darrington 3-2 in a classic pitcher's duel at home March 22. La Conner hurlers Nathan Bailey and Kenai Zimmerman combined to one-hit the Loggers and fan 14 batters while yielding just a pair of unearned runs in the NW2B/1B debut for both clubs. Bailey, who threw 83 pitches, struck out 10 and gave up just one safety – a ground-ball single in the fourth inning that caromed off the third base bag and advanced a Darrington r...

  • Braves roll to 7-1 win in home opener

    Bill Reynolds|Mar 20, 2024

The La Conner High baseball team was in mid-season form for its home opener last Thursday. The Braves used sharp pitching, crisp defense and discipline at the plate to post an impressive 7-1 nonleague triumph over Evergreen Lutheran. Starter Nathan Bailey tossed three hitless innings and fanned five Wolverines hitters, then gained solid relief efforts from Charles Jackson, Kaleb Otis and Ivory Damien. Together, they limited Evergreen to five singles and a lone tally over the final four frames....

  • Track and field teams post strong start in season debut

    Bill Reynolds|Mar 20, 2024

Tommy Murdock picked up where he left off a year ago. The La Conner High School senior, who is the reigning Washington State 2B boys’ 110- and 300-meter hurdles champion, swept his signature events during a 10-team season debut meet at Whittaker Field last Wednesday. Murdock cruised to triumphs in the 110 (16.00) and 300 (41.10), setting the tone for several solid performances by a slimmed-down La Conner track-and-field program that is focused on quality rather than quantity to kick off the 2024 campaign. Murdock picked up a third solo t...

La Conner’s Ivory Damien and Brayden Pedroza were first team All-League picks on the boys’ side while Maeve McCormick was a girls’ All-NW2B/1B first-unit selection. Damien and Pedroza were reliable scorers all season for the Braves. Damien netted a game-high 38 points – all but three of those in the seco...

Spring teams meet as winter clings

    Bill Reynolds|Mar 6, 2024

Longtime La Conner High School baseball coach Jeremiah LeSourd has a favorite saying this time of year. "You know it's the start of baseball season," he often notes at the end of February and start of March, "because there'll be snow on the ground." Mother Nature has been true to form this year. The first week of practice for Braves baseball, Lady Braves softball, and La Conner track and field and golf teams was met variously with snow, hail, wind and rain. All that plus a couple brief sun...

  • Coach talks to basketball players in a huddle

Both La Conner basketball teams ousted from state playoffs

    Bill Reynolds|Feb 28, 2024

State seeding sent La Conner High School's basketball teams south. Unfortunately, their hopes of advancing to the round of 12 at the Spokane Arena this week went south as well. The boys' team was eliminated by Adna with a heartbreaking 66-62 overtime loss in Chehalis on Saturday, a game that saw the Braves battle back from foul trouble and a double-digit deficit to have a shot at winning in the waning moments of regulation. The youthful girls, meanwhile, with six eighth graders and no seniors...

Cassius Landworth, a second grader in teacher Stacy Silver's classroom, has received an impressive collection of memorabilia from some of the nation's most famous and popular sports franchises. It started last fall when Cash, as he's known to friends and family, decided to write to each of the NFL teams. It was no...

    Bill Reynolds|Feb 21, 2024

The La Conner High School girls’ basketball team took two different routes last week to reach the same destination – Victory Lane at Coupeville. The Lady Braves netted top honors on the girls’ side of the NW2B bi-district tournament with a lopsided 52-15 win at home over Northwest Christian of Lacey on Feb. 13 followed by a tense 46-42 triumph over league rival Friday Harbor last Thursday in Coupeville. They were two totally different games that produced a single result. La Conner, 16-7 overall and with no seniors on its roster in an expect...

  • Braves boys rebound from Coupeville loss to secure regional berth

    Bill Reynolds|Feb 21, 2024

Home sweet home. That time-honored phrase perfectly served the La Conner Braves well at last week’s Northwest 2B bi-district basketball tournament where they sandwiched triumphs on their home floor over Northwest Christian of Lacey and Auburn Adventist Academy around a tough loss to league rival Coupeville on the Wolves’ court. The 68-57 win over Auburn Adventist last Saturday secured for La Conner (16-7) a berth in the regional round of the state playoffs. Junior guard Brayden Pedroza, who had erupted for 43 points in the Braves’ 74-29 bi-di...

The boys’ team won two of three bi-district tests and is seeded 15th. It faces a loser-out contest with No. 10 Adna. The La Conner-Adna winner also moves on to Spokane for the round of 12. The...
