La Conner alumnus Wayne Lindstrom of Mount Vernon died at age 89 on Sunday, February 9.
He was born October 1, 1924 in Northwood, North Dakota to Wendell and Mathea Lundgaard Lindstrom. At an early age, Wayne moved with his family to La Conner, where he grew up and graduated from La Conner High School.
Wayne enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943 and earned an officer’s commission in 1944. On December 19, 1944, he married his high school sweetheart, and love of his life, Birgit Larson. He proudly served three years during World War II as a Navigator Officer aboard the USS Bronx, an attack transport ship.
He was an accountant by profession, and he and Birgit loved to travel. Their favorite place was Hawaii. Wayne loved growing flowers: African violets and roses were his favorites. He also loved dancing.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Birgit and his daughter Judy.
He is survived by his daughter Linda and her husband Bob Myette; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild. He also leaves his best friend in his final years, Betty Stewart, a former high school friend, whom he met again after moving into Mountain Glen Retirement Center.
At Wayne’s request, no formal service will be held. A private family service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the care of Kern Funeral Home.
