After years of being in the dark, the Rainbow Bridge may soon light the way over the Swinomish Channel once again.
La Conner Mayor Ramon Hayes announced the idea to the town council last week, during a roundtable discussion. The idea to rekindle the lights was originally brought to Hayes by Shelter Bay residents Ken Olsen and Chuck Norris.
“I’ve talked informally with county commissioners,” said Hayes. “I’ve talked with local communities and The Port of Skagit: there was no negativity whatsoever. There was only overwhelming support for the project.”
Hayes pitched the plan of a new set of lights to illuminate the bridge, which included the option to dim, brighten and even change colors of the lights. Hayes said the infrastructure costs would be around $30,000 without labor. The council responded in support of the idea.
“The Port budgeted $5,000 to the project for this year, and I will ask if they will again next year to get closer to the mark,” said Hayes. “I know it’s a tight budget, but I was hoping the town could help fill the gap.”
Before the idea reached the council or Hayes, it had been a small project for Shelter Bay residents Ken Olsen and Chuck Norris.
