Donald Dean Mulanax died peacefully at his home in La Conner on Thursday, December 4, with his family by his side. He was 88 years old.
Don had a 40-year career in Todd Shipyards, starting as a welder and ending as general superintendent. In La Conner, he was known as an artist and craftsman. He and his wife, Jo Ann, owned and operated Morris Street Antiques in La Conner for 28 years.
His accomplishments were many — everything from growing fuchsias to carving fantastic egg shells, and a variety of wooden figures, including Santas and full-sized carrousel horses.
Don was also a real artist with all manner of steel animals — including the metal turkey sculptures still on display in town — and full-sized trees. He could do anything he set his mind to. He was a kind man, known for his wit and gentle smile.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, two sons and one great-grandson.
Don leaves his wife, Jo Ann and his children, Mark (Lorraine), and Matt Mulanax, Michael (Sandi), Ron and Sheryl Mirenta. He also leaves eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren and is also survived by a sister and brother.
