La Conner High came out flat but kept on truckin.’
And, in the end, the Lady Braves shifted gears with some daring base running and timely hitting to forge a 6-5 comeback win in non-league softball action with Meridian on Thursday.
Elizabeth Tripp stole two bases during a key sixth inning La Conner rally that tied the score, setting up a sharply hit game-winning infield grounder by Le Anne Swan in the seventh.
“Coming back to tie the game in the sixth and then winning it in the seventh was a huge confidence builder for us,” said La Conner head coach Peg Seeling, whose team visited NW2B rival Concrete late Monday.
“It was definitely an exciting win,” Seeling said.
The Lady Braves, 2-2 overall, edged 1A Meridian despite collecting just two base hits — one safety apiece from Swan and winning pitcher Olivia Hedlund.
La Conner took advantage of five Meridian miscues and ran wild on the bases, with Swan pilfering four bags.
Hedlund, meanwhile, scattered eight hits and yielded just two earned runs. She fanned five Meridian hitters.
La Conner’s approach at the plate improved during a non-conference twinbill at 2A Bellingham on Saturday.
Despite dropping both ends of the doubleheader, Seeling saw the trip to Bellingham as a win-win situation.
“We improved on offense and cleaned up our defense, especially in the second game, and made some outstanding plays in the field,” she said.
La Conner reached Red Raider ace Eliza Rossman for three hits in the opener, two of them a pair of doubles by Hedlund.
Tripp added a safety for the Lady Braves.
Bellingham played flawless defense behind Rossman, who recorded 14 strikeouts in the 9-0 Red Raider triumph.
Justina Allen and Lindsay Richard had two hits each and combined for six RBIs to pace the victors.
Six of Bellingham’s runs were of the unearned variety as Hedlund notched eight whiffs.
La Conner roughed up Richard for eight runs in the five-inning nightcap, but still fell three markers short.
Hedlund led the Lady Braves with two hits, including a solo homer. Chloe Fullington ripped a double and a single and drove in a pair of runs for La Conner.
Tripp and Ashley Watkins lined two singles each, while Lexi Bobb rounded out the Lady Braves’ attack with a two-run double.
La Conner resumes league play on April 8 at Orcas.
