La Conner resident David Ferguson died at home on Wednesday, January 27 at the age of 48.
David was born on February 8, 1967 and grew up in La Conner. Known as the “pun king” to his family members, he was best known in town for his ready smile, quick sense of humor and his love of “Tiny Burgers” at his favorite eatery and his ability to entertain people.
When the U.S. Mint released the new nickel design in 2005, David began collecting what he called “counterfeit” nickels. Local merchants saved the new ones for him and helped him amass a collection of $538.80. His goal was to collect $555.55 in new nickels, his sister said. He was saving for a trip to Italy.
David had an enormous collection of coins, steins, knives, and family photos. He had a laugh like Harry from “Harry and the Hendersons,” and his humor was infectious.
Life was a challenge for David, and he handled it with kindness, laughter and enduring compassion. He worked at Chinook Enterprises for almost 20 years and achieved a modified horticulture degree, in spite of his handicaps.
He leaves behind four sisters: Kelly “DeDe,” his caretaker and the family glue; Jana, his gambling buddy; Lisa, his partner in crime; and Heidi, his childhood companion. He also leaves behind his brother Deryl, who named him and cherished his childhood days. Along with his siblings, he leaves behind a plethora of nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews, co-workers and many friends.
He goes to join his mother Dawn, his sisters Patty and Macy, and the older brother he idolized, Steve.
To know him was to love him. He will be missed. Services will be held at Kern Funeral Home, 1122 S. Third St. in Mount Vernon on Friday, February 5 at 4 p.m.
