After spending her entire life in La Conner, Roberta Nelson died Saturday, October 1, at the age of 94. She was comfortable and in the company of family when her journey began.
Roberta was born on July 31, 1922, and spent her life in the service of the local community. She worked for a number of family-operated businesses, identified aircraft in the town’s watchtower during World War II, and sat on La Conner’s town council for several years.
She was a source of knowledge about La Conner’s past and spearheaded early efforts to preserve La Conner’s rich history. Roberta also helped revitalize the town after a long period of economic hardship, reshaping our community into its present state. She and her late husband, Louie Nelson, were iconic town fixtures — both known for their spirited personalities.
She was the matriarch of the greater Moore clan and her immediate family: her son Terry Nelson, her daughter Veronica Nelson, grandson Matt Nelson, granddaughter Jessica Brady, and grandson Brandon Springer.
Roberta’s family graveside service will be held at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, followed by her public reception, 1 p.m. on Friday, October 14, at Maple Hall in La Conner. All are welcome to attend.
