Families read together at elementary school

Washington Reading Corp

Family Literacy Night was hosted at La Conner Elementary School on January 8. It’s an annual event designed to encourage parent and caregiver involvement in student’s educational experiences in a way that is both fun and empowering.

This year, the event was themed the Read Aloud Campground. Attendees had the opportunity to participate in variety of camping and nature based activities inspired by various books which were on display. Families navigated through the Campground by reading a map outlining the stations which included: pet rock painting, crafting paper bag owls, solving word puzzles, fishing for sight words, listening to stories round a cellophane campfire and having photos taken with props in front of a mini camper. A free book swap, organized by the La Conner Middle School Leadership Students, served as a trading post as visitors exchanged lightly used books.

Over 180 guests signed into the event, half of whom were students. Everyone who ventured to the Read Aloud Campground received a free hotdog dinner. Campers had the chance to take home crafts and giveaways. Fifteen grand prize winners’ names were drawn throughout the evening.

Family Literacy Night is made possible by hardworking hands and the support of the community. The AmeriCorps – Washington Reading Corps volunteers who headed up the event would like to thank the following organizations for their sponsorship: La Conner School District Leadership, Teachers, and Staff, La Conner After School Braves Club, La Conner Middle School Student Leadership, Haggen Grocery of Mount Vernon, Costco of Burlington, Frontier Building Supply and Barnes & Noble of Bellingham. Also, a special thank you goes out to all the volunteers who contributed to the evening’s fun and the event’s great success.
