Your independent hometown award-winning newspaper
Some of us remember the good old days, when mail meant the postal carrier delivered an envelope with a stamp on it. For special occasions, people bought cards, at the drug or grocery store, and wrote their loved one’s name on them. Those were the days.
Just when you were certain this editor was a crusty, testy old crank, good for nothing but complaining and kicking the cat, voila: surprised by joy. One day you will come to see the editor is an incurable romantic, but for now go ahead and moan and groan about how boring and predictable and polemical he is.
Meanwhile, every once in awhile I will do my best to have joy do something between creeping in and shouting out.
We have joy or we have nothing. We are joyful or we are nothing.
All this leads up to yes, I have a deal for you. Like in the old days, you can send a valentine to your valentine through the mail. The Weekly News will deliver it, to some on the 14th, to the door. Or buy a newsstand or story copy and present it at dinner on Feb. 14: Your honey’s name in print, for all to see you proclaiming your love. How cool is that?
On page eight of the Feb. 14 edition of the Weekly News you can have three lines and 15 words to woo your sweetheart. Here’s a bonus: a five line limerick for the three line price. Or, your names boldly in red.
The cost: $15 for the three lines or the limerick, $12 for your names in red. Bonus: for $5 more I will write the limerick – which you will approve – for you.
Here is a maybe too suggestive sample: There was a fellow named Nick / Who found he was incredibly sick / In love he was / For his sweet turtle dove / Just the thought of her made him tick.
So dig deep into your pockets and buy that favorite Valentine – busted: you have more than one? – a “Let me count the ways” Valentine delivered in the Feb. 14th – could it be better planned? – Weekly News.
Email: [email protected], 360-466-3315 or come to 119 North Third Street by 5 p.m. Monday, Feb. 12.
And sh-h-h-h. This is a surprise.
My lips are sealed.
