Longtime resident of La Conner, Jean Cram, passed away July 16 in Anacortes, WA. She was 97 years old. She was preceded in death by her husband Sam Cram.
Jean was born in Everett, Washington on October 11, 1920 to Herb and Nellie Hill. She grew up in Marysville and graduated from Marysville High School. She attended business school in Everett, Washington, and then moved to Mount Vernon where she worked as a bookkeeper for the Carnation Company. She met Sam Cram of La Conner and they were married in 1944. They worked and lived on the family farm in La Conner from then on.
Jean loved gardening of all types as evidenced by the colorful flowers in her yard and fruit trees of all kinds surrounding their house.
She also liked to exercise; and later in life became an avid walker.
People in La Conner would see Jean on her daily walks rain or shine.
She enjoyed reading, although she was known to read the ending early if a book was too suspenseful.
She also liked writing letters to stay in in touch with friends and family.
She would say, “Why phone when you can write them a letter?” Most of all she loved being a grandmother, and later a great grandmother.
Sam and Jean enjoyed traveling with friends, and spending part of the winter at their home in Desert Hot Springs, California.
Jean was a Founding Member of the La Conner Library and was a volunteer librarian for many years. In fact, she still has library card #1. She loved animals, especially dogs; the bigger the better. The family always had a stray dog and cat around that Jean just couldn’t turn away. She was a regular contributor to the Skagit Valley Humane Society; and was also a member of the Billikins in La Conner.
Jean is survived by her son Herb Cram (Sally), her daughter Susan Martin (Paul) and her daughter Nancy Cram; as well as 4 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
A celebration of Jean’s life will be held at the La Conner United Methodist Church on Tuesday July 31, 2018 at 3 p.m..
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Skagit County Humane Society, 18841 Kelleher Rd., Burlington, WA 98233 or The La Conner Memorial Library, P.O. Box 1025 La Conner, WA 98257.
