Saturday in the Park was a big hit in the 70s for the rock band Chicago.
Thursday in the Park has been a big hit in La Conner for generations. The first Thursday in August, that is.
The 114th annual Pioneer Picnic, featuring special presentations to members of the Babarovich family and championship high school football coach Glenn Rickert, is scheduled here tomorrow.
The Aug. 2 event starts at 11 a.m. at Pioneer Park by the Rainbow Bridge.
The public is cordially invited to attend.
The gathering includes a complete salmon barbecue luncheon, prepared by the Good Girls and served by members of the La Conner Civic Garden Club, plus the annual meeting of the Skagit County Pioneer Association, chaired by Karen Summers. The $15 lunch price includes a colorful ribbon that is a ticket to free admission at the Skagit County Historical Museum through the weekend, a program and a historian’s memorial pamphlet.
La Conner Sunrise Food Bank volunteers will serve beverages. The Leif & Sunnie Accordion Duo is providing music.
The Babarovich family was instrumental in the development of the modern commercial salmon industry in north Puget Sound and the arrival in Anacortes of pioneering Croatian fishing families.
Coach Rickert’s Burlington-Edison High Tigers established a level of excellence during his 33-year tenure at the school that was admired throughout the state and beyond. Under Rickert, who compiled a 269-72-10 career mark, B-EHS won two Kingbowl crowns and the epic 1971 Skagit Super Bowl clash with archrival Mount Vernon.
The Babarovich family was profiled in the La Conner Weekly News’ June 20 issue. Coach Rickert was featured June 27.
